Alex Mwakideu highlights research showing Gen Z turning to marijuana over alcohol

Radio host Alex Mwakideu says new trends show that Gen Z are moving away from alcohol and turning more to marijuana.
Speaking on his radio show on Monday, April 6, 2026, he explains that this shift is not only being seen in Kenya but also in other parts of the world.
He says the younger generation is changing habits that were common before, especially when it comes to drinking. He explains that research now shows a clear move from alcohol to smoking among Gen Z.
“It is the first generation in the world, yenye imepunguza pombe sana unywaji wa pombe na ikaongeza uvutaji wa bangi,” Alex Mwakideu said.

He adds that this generation is now choosing different ways of relaxing compared to older groups. He explains that many are no longer focused on alcohol as before and are instead turning to other options.
“Wako kwa bangi zaidi ya pombe,” he explained.
Global shift in lifestyle habits
Alex Mwakideu says the trend is also being reported in countries like the United States. He explains that reports show alcohol sales are going down while marijuana use is rising among young people.
He says this change shows a wider global pattern, not just a local one. He explains that the behaviour is spreading across different regions and is becoming more common.

“Even in America, they are saying, hawauzi pombe jinsi ambavyo bangi inavyo vutwa,” Alex Mwakideu said.
He adds that more people are now choosing to smoke instead of drink. He explains that this is changing how people spend their free time and how they socialise.
“Watu wanavuta bangi kushinda pombe. Sasa wako huku side b. Wanavuta kuvuta. Sio Kenya tu, duniani kote. Weed over alcohol,” he explained.
Alex Mwakideu says research continues to support this shift among Gen Z. He explains that the phrase “The smoke over the drink” reflects what is currently happening with the younger generation.
“The smoke over the drink! Research shows GenZs prefer the smoke more,” Alex Mwakideu said.
