Why millennials and Gen Z are choosing civil weddings

Across Kenya, a growing number of millennials and Gen Z couples are shifting away from traditional, elaborate weddings in favour of simple civil ceremonies.

From high costs to changing values around marriage, young people are redefining what a perfect wedding looks like.

Here are some of the reasons young Kenyans are choosing civil weddings.

  • Rising cost of weddings

One of the biggest reasons behind this shift is affordability. Traditional weddings, whether cultural or church ceremonies, often come with heavy financial demands.

From bride price negotiations to large guest lists and reception costs, many couples are choosing to avoid long-term debt just to host a single day event.

Civil weddings, on the other hand, are more straightforward and budget-friendly, allowing couples to prioritise their future together rather than spending heavily on the ceremony.

  • Simplicity over pressure

For many young couples, the pressure that comes with traditional weddings is overwhelming. Expectations from family, community, and cultural traditions can turn weddings into large social events rather than personal milestones.

Civil ceremonies offer a more private and stress-free alternative. Couples can focus on the legal commitment without the pressure of meeting societal expectations.

  • Changing attitudes toward marriage

Millennials and Gen Z are also approaching marriage differently from previous generations. Many prefer to build financial stability, careers, and personal growth before investing in expensive ceremonies.

There is also a growing belief that the strength of a marriage is not defined by the size of the wedding but by the quality of the relationship itself.

  • Influence of urban lifestyles

Urban living has also played a role in shaping these choices. In cities like Nairobi, fast-paced lifestyles and higher living costs encourage practicality. Young couples are more exposed to global trends where simple courthouse weddings are common and socially accepted.

  • Focus on financial priorities

Instead of spending millions on a one-day event, many couples are opting to redirect funds towards more lasting investments such as business ventures, property, education, or travel.

For this generation, financial planning and independence often take priority over traditional wedding glamour.

Redefining tradition

Despite the rise in civil weddings, relationship experts say this does not mean young people are rejecting marriage. Instead, they are redefining how it is celebrated.

Civil weddings are becoming a reflection of practicality, independence, and changing cultural values in modern Kenya, where love is still central, but simplicity is increasingly preferred.
