Alex Mwakideu questions CCTV monitoring inside Utumishi Girls’ dorms
Radio host Alex Mwakideu has questioned the use of CCTV cameras inside dormitories at Utumishi Girls School following the recent fire tragedy in Gilgil.
Speaking on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, about the matter, he said many questions have emerged after CCTV footage reportedly showed how the fire started. He noted that the discussion has continued as people seek answers about the cameras.
“Mjadala umeshika moto mtandaoni, ni mjadala kuhusiana na shule ya Utumishi ya wasichana iliyochomeka majuzi katika eneo la GilGil pale ambapo wasichana wetu walipoteza maisha yao takriban kumi na sita,” Alex Mwakideu said.
He explained that questions arose after footage from CCTV cameras was seen. According to Mwakideu, some people are now wondering why surveillance cameras were installed inside the dormitories. He said the issue has led to concerns about privacy and the monitoring of students.

“Baadaye, tumeona CCTV cameras za kuonyesha jinsi ambavyo ule moto uliwashwa. So wanajiuliza maswali mbona kuna CCTV cameras ndani ya mabweni?” Alex Mwakideu said.
Mwakideu further stated that some of the concerns being raised relate to who has access to the footage. He said people are asking whether someone in a control room could be watching students inside the dormitories. He noted that these questions continue to be part of the discussion.
Questions over privacy concerns
“Kuna wale wanadai kwamba …watu wanauliza hivi kuna mtu amekaa katika control room ya CCTV anawaona watoto wetu wa kike wakibadilisha nguo?” Alex Mwakideu said.
He explained that the matter has also sparked debate about whether CCTV cameras are necessary inside student dormitories. Mwakideu questioned whether the challenges schools are trying to address can be handled through other methods. He said people are looking for clarity on the role of such surveillance systems.
“Ndio nauliza maswali, hivi bullying haiwezi kukabiliwa bila CCTV kuwepo?” Alex Mwakideu said.

Mwakideu also questioned who is responsible for monitoring the cameras and accessing the footage. He said this is one of the key concerns that have been raised since the CCTV videos became part of the discussion. According to him, there is a need for answers regarding those overseeing the system.
“Ni nani huyu amekaa katika control room? Ni mtoto wa kiume ama mtoto wa kike?” Alex Mwakideu said.
He also questioned whether CCTV cameras should be installed inside girls’ dormitories at all. The presenter said the ongoing discussion has raised important questions about privacy, monitoring, and the use of surveillance systems in school living spaces.
