Mkamburi Chigogo warns women against men who call them strong independent women

Radio host Mkamburi Chigogo has warned women to be careful when men describe them as strong, independent women.
She said such statements may carry a different meaning, especially when used by men who are interested in them. Mkamburi questioned why women should be expected to be strong in the first place.
“Na nataka kuambia hawa warembo. Unaona hawa wanaume wanapenda kuwaambia sijui you are strong, sijui you are a strong independent woman. You know you have to be very careful of such statements,” Mkamburi Chigogo said on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.

She explained that women should not automatically take such compliments at face value. According to Mkamburi, a man may genuinely like a woman when he uses the description, but she should still understand what the words could mean.
“Sometimes inaweza kuwa mtu anakupenda kweli ndio anakuambia hivyo. Lakini wewe jua tu, hizo ni statement za kukuregesha kama mwanaume mwenzake,” Mkamburi said.
Mkamburi questions the use of ‘strong’
Mkamburi said she does not believe that being described as strong should be viewed as something women need to achieve. She questioned the reason behind the description and said women should not feel pressured to fit into that image.
“Where has it been written that a woman needs to be strong? No. A woman must be soft, a woman must be weak, a woman must be vulnerable,” Mkamburi said.
She further argued that the term strong should not be used when describing women. Her comments focused on the way some men describe women and the meaning she believes can be attached to such statements.

“Kwanza hiyo term strong, it should never be used to describe a woman,” Mkamburi Chigogo said.
Mkamburi maintained that women should be cautious when they are repeatedly described using the term. She said the description can make a woman view herself in a certain way while also affecting how she relates to the man using it.
The media personality said women should therefore pay attention to the words used by men when describing them. She encouraged them to be careful with statements that present them as strong or independent, particularly when the words come from men who may be interested in them.
