George Maelo returns to Kenya Police FC with title and CAF ambitions

George Maelo has returned to Kenya Police FC as team manager, bringing with him a strong history at the club and an ambition to help the Law Enforcers challenge for domestic and continental honours.
Maelo, who has previously served as Police FC team manager on two occasions, has been handed the responsibility again as the club looks to build on the success achieved during his previous tenure. His latest appointment comes after a spell away from the club.
His return is particularly notable because of the role he played in Police FC’s transformation following their promotion to the top flight.
Maelo was part of the Police FC setup when the club secured promotion to the Kenyan Premier League in 2021 after overcoming Vihiga United in the promotion/relegation playoff. He subsequently helped oversee campaigns that saw the club finish ninth in the 2021/22 season and third in 2022/23.
He later left the club before making his return in November 2024, at a time when Police FC were struggling near the bottom of the league.
The club had made a difficult start to the 2024/25 campaign, but Maelo’s return coincided with a dramatic turnaround. Working alongside the technical bench and players, Police FC moved from the relegation zone into contention for the title before eventually securing their maiden FKF Premier League championship.
The achievement represented a remarkable turnaround for a side that had been in danger of relegation earlier in the season.
Maelo previously attributed the transformation to restoring unity within the squad and creating a better working environment between the players, technical bench and management.
His contribution to the club’s success was also recognised by reports describing him as an important figure behind the scenes, particularly in handling the team’s welfare and logistical needs. His responsibilities have included ensuring that players have proper accommodation, transport, meals and security around matches.
Police FC went on to win their first-ever league title in June 2025, securing a historic championship and a place in the CAF Champions League.
Maelo sets ambitious targets
Following his reappointment, Maelo has immediately set his sights on another title challenge while also targeting progress in continental competition.
Expressing his gratitude after being handed the job, Maelo thanked the club’s leadership and the senior officials who supported his return.
“I am thankful to Almighty God for the grace and opportunity to come and service the best club in Kenya Police FC.” Maelo said on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at Kenya Police Sacco after his unveiling.
He also expressed appreciation to the club’s patron, deputy patron, chairman and board of trustees for entrusting him with the responsibility.
“I thank the Patron PS Interior Mr. Omollo, Our DIG KPS Deputy Patron Mr. Lagat, Our Chairman Mr. Nyale,the Board of trustee for giving me this chance,am humbled.”
Maelo’s immediate target is to help Police FC compete strongly for the league title and make a deeper impression in African football.
“I look forward for a tough challenging season with top notch target of winning the league and playing at the group stage of CAF.”
That ambition reflects Police FC’s growing status in Kenyan football. After winning the league for the first time in 2025, the club has increasingly focused on establishing itself among the country’s leading sides and competing more effectively on the continental stage.
More than football
Maelo also sees football as an avenue through which Police FC can connect with its supporters and contribute to society beyond results on the pitch.
He said his objective is not only to help the club win but also to create an environment that brings happiness to its supporters and contributes to mental health awareness.
“To also entertain and bring happiness to Kenya Police fans as a means to fight mental awareness in the society, work without play makes tom a dull boy.”
The team manager further promised to bring a strong professional approach to his latest assignment.
“I will bring in professionalism and passion.” He added.
Maelo also believes he can leave the club in a stronger position than he found it.
A familiar figure at Police FC
Maelo’s long association with Police FC gives him considerable knowledge of the club’s structures and ambitions.
Reports indicate that he was involved with the club during its formative years and later returned as team manager after its promotion to the top flight. His first stint coincided with the club’s establishment in the Premier League, while his second stint culminated in its historic title triumph.
His background also extends beyond football administration. Maelo is a serving police officer and was promoted from Inspector to Chief Inspector of Police by the National Police Service Commission in 2025.
He previously played for Sofapaka and was also associated with the now-disbanded Red Berets FC before becoming increasingly involved in Police FC’s management.
His latest return therefore comes with experience of both the club’s difficult periods and its greatest achievement.
Now, with Police FC looking to remain among Kenya’s leading clubs, Maelo faces another demanding assignment.
His message is clear: professionalism, passion, domestic success and a stronger presence in CAF competitions will form the basis of his latest chapter at the Law Enforcers.
