Sonia Kanyiri wonders: What could women achieve if they had wives at home too?

Kenyan content creator Sonia Kanyiri has questioned what women could achieve if they had wives at home to handle some of the responsibilities traditionally placed on women in relationships.
In a post shared on Instagram on Monday, September 14, 2026, Kanyiri reflected on how different life could be for women if they had someone at home taking care of the concerns that often occupy their time and energy.

In the voice note, Kanyiri imagined a situation where women in positions of power did not have to worry about some of the responsibilities associated with running a home.
“Like I’ve always wondered. Like, can you imagine all the things women could achieve in this world if they had wives at home too?” she said.
Kanyiri continued by imagining how having wives at home could change the experience of women who hold demanding positions.
“Just imagine if they had wives and they didn’t have to worry about what most wives worry. And they had wives to worry about those things at home,” she added.
Her comments point to the often-unseen responsibilities that come with managing a household, including caring for children, organising family needs and handling day-to-day domestic matters.
The work women could do without domestic pressure
Kanyiri’s observation raises a broader question about how much women could accomplish if domestic responsibilities were shared differently.
For many women, balancing professional ambitions with household responsibilities can mean dividing their attention between their careers and family life. The expectation to keep up with both can also leave women with less time to pursue opportunities, rest or focus on personal goals.
By imagining women having wives at home, Kanyiri appears to reverse a familiar arrangement in which women are often expected to provide support for their partners while also pursuing their own careers.
Her reflection ultimately asks what could happen if women in leadership, business and other demanding careers had someone else handling the responsibilities they are traditionally expected to manage at home.
The thought experiment also highlights the value of domestic work, suggesting that the person taking care of responsibilities at home can play an important role in enabling the other partner to focus on their ambitions.
