JAY-Z opens up about his growth as an artiste since becoming a husband and father

American rapper and music mogul Jay-Z has opened up about how becoming a husband and father influenced his growth as an artist, saying maturity pushed him to remain true to himself while continuing to explore new creative ground.
The rapper spoke during an interview for the premiere of his new documentary, JAŸ-Z in 8, on Sunday, September 13, 2026, where he reflected on his journey in music and the lessons that have shaped him over the years.
Jay-Z on growth as an artist
Asked how becoming a husband and father changed the way he approached his music, Jay-Z linked the change to maturity and the need to keep challenging himself.
He explained that artists can easily fall into the trap of trying to repeat what worked for them in the past instead of exploring new ideas. “I guess, you know, just maturity in general. Just trying to find that space where you’re staying true to yourself,” he said.
Jay-Z added that trying something different can be uncomfortable, especially for an established artist who has already achieved success. “As an artist, there are a lot of traps, and you can fall into the trap of trying to recreate your own success. Or you can be, and it’s quite frightening to try new territory. So, you know, just keep challenging yourself,” he explained.
For him, growth has meant accepting that discomfort rather than allowing past achievements to dictate his next move.
Lessons from growing up in Marcy
Jay-Z also reflected on his childhood in Marcy Projects in Brooklyn, New York, and how the environment shaped the values he later carried into adulthood. The rapper said growing up there taught him about self-worth, integrity and the importance of how one carries themselves.
“I think Marcy gave me so much self-worth and integrity. You know, when you grow up in those types of environments, the way you carry yourself is life or death,” he said.
He described the community as tough but said it gave him important lessons that remained with him throughout his career.
From Marcy to fatherhood
Jay-Z said the values he learnt while growing up have also influenced how he raises and advises his children.
He recalled being surrounded by people who valued pride, loyalty and integrity, describing those lessons as some of the important things he learnt at a young age. “I’m grateful to have grown up in such a magical place. It was tough, and it was hard, but the lessons were there,” he said.
The rapper also pointed out that he had already experienced a lot of life before his music career reached its biggest stages.
By the time his first album was released, Jay-Z was 26 years old, meaning he had already gained experiences that later influenced his outlook as an artist and as a parent.
Staying true to himself
His reflections show how his personal life and upbringing continue to influence his creative journey.
Rather than trying to repeat earlier successes, Jay-Z said he has focused on challenging himself, exploring new territory, and remaining comfortable with the uncertainty that comes with growth.
The approach has also shaped the lessons he passes on to his children, with the values he learnt in Marcy remaining part of his identity despite the changes in his life and career.
