Mkamburi Chigogo questions calls for leniency in Utumishi Girls fire tragedy

Mkamburi Chigogo has questioned calls for leniency towards minors linked to the Utumishi Girls fire tragedy.

Speaking about the incident on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, she said the incident was different from the unrest that has been witnessed in schools over the years. She argued that the actions described in the case should not be excused because of the age of those involved.

“What we were discussing ni hii story ya Utumishi Girls and the unrest. Hichi si kitu mpya. Haya mambo yamefanyika. Inafanyika first term, inafanyika third term, lakini cha ajabu ni kwamba hawa wasichana they decided to burn..wakachoma ..wale wasichana kwenye bweni,” Mkamburi Chigogo said.

She explained that school unrest is not a new issue and has happened before in different school terms. However, she said the circumstances being discussed in this case were shocking because lives were lost.

Chigogo described the deaths of the girls as a sad outcome.

“Which was sad, wakaaga,” Mkamburi Chigogo said.

The radio queen also addressed calls from some parents who want the minors released because they are under the age of 18. She said she disagreed with that position and argued that age should not take away responsibility for serious actions.

Debate over release of minors

“Wazazi wa wale watoto…what they are saying ni kwamba release these kids, because they are under 18. But these are criminals. Let us call it for what it is,” Mkamburi Chigogo said.

She went on to question details that had been raised about the incident. Chigogo said the allegations being discussed pointed to actions that went beyond ordinary school unrest. She argued that the seriousness of the matter should not be ignored.

“But to the extent that mnachoma mnamake sure mmefunga mlango ndio wasitoke?” Mkamburi Chigogo said.

She further referred to claims that one of the affected areas did not have an easy way out. According to Chigogo, such details raise serious questions about the events that took place. She maintained that the matter should be viewed based on the reported actions.

Chigogo also rejected suggestions that the minors involved should mainly be viewed as children dealing with trauma. She said she does not agree with that argument in relation to the case being discussed.

“When people say we need to treat them as kids, sijui they had trauma, no!” Mkamburi Chigogo said.
