The family of the late Gengetone artiste Paul Koigi Mungai, popularly known as Shalkido, has announced plans to hold a candlelight vigil in his honour following his tragic death in a motorbike accident on Monday, October 6, 2025.

According to his father, the family has already concluded burial arrangements, confirming that the Wamlambez hitmaker will be laid to rest on Thursday, October 16, at his grandmother’s home in Murera, Ruiru.

The father, speaking to YouTuber Jackie Ogaga on Saturday, October 11, 2025, revealed that the candlelight vigil will be held at Choma Zone in Ruiru, where fellow artistes, friends, and fans are expected to gather to celebrate his life and music career.

“We had not been sure where to bury my son, but we have now discussed and agreed that we will lay him to rest here at his grandmother’s home in Murera. The burial will be on Thursday, October 16. We will also have a candle lighting event at Choma Zone in Ruiru, and all artistes will be there,” the father shared.

The vigil is expected to attract top figures from the Gengetone scene as well as comedians, media personalities, and supporters who worked closely with the artiste during his musical journey.

The father also addressed ongoing social media discussions suggesting that Shalkido’s death may have been connected to comedian Eric Omondi and media personality Oga Obinna, who were among the last people to interact with him before the accident.

He dismissed the rumours and instead expressed appreciation for their continued support during the family’s difficult period.

“I have heard some people saying bad things about Eric Omondi and Oga Obinna, but I want them to know that Obinna was a very close friend to Shalkido, and I am grateful to him because I can already see he will continue standing with us. May God bless him. I have never met Eric Omondi in person, but I thank him for standing with our son,” the father added.

Shalkido’s grandmother, who raised him from childhood, also thanked Kenyans for the overwhelming support, emphasising that the family holds no ill feelings toward anyone.

She said that the family has chosen to focus on honouring Shalkido’s memory rather than entertaining baseless speculations circulating online.

“I thank God for all of you who stood with my grandchild. To those speaking badly about Eric Omondi and Obinna, I ask for forgiveness on their behalf. As for me and my household, we say may God bless them. They helped us, and we are grateful. Let people not speak evil; instead, let them thank God for those who supported our child,” the granny said.

The family’s latest statement comes amid widespread mourning from fans and artistes across the country. Shalkido, a former member of the popular Gengetone group Sailors Gang, rose to fame alongside his colleagues Miracle Baby, Qoqosjuma, Lexxy Yung, and Masilver, with hit songs such as Wamlambez, Pekejeng, and Wainame.

Before his death, Shalkido had been hospitalised in the Intensive Care Unit at Kenyatta University Referral Hospital, where doctors battled to save his life after he sustained internal bleeding and a broken leg.

Reports indicated that he was involved in a motorbike crash while travelling from Thika to Nairobi shortly after performing at an event.

His death was first confirmed by family members through a video shared online, where his cousin and father informed fans that he had succumbed to his injuries at around 6:30 p.m.
