Shakib opens up on wife Zari Hassan’s miscarriage that happened in May

Shakib Cham Lutaaya, the husband of Ugandan socialite and businesswoman Zarinah Hassan, has revealed that his wife experienced a miscarriage in May, describing the loss as deeply painful and something he has found difficult to speak about.
Speaking in an interview on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, Shakib said that while he was fully aware of the situation, he chose not to make any public statement at the time because Zari herself had openly shared the news.
“Yes, it is true that she had a miscarriage in May. It was not me who said it, but her, and she was open about it. She is the better person to explain it further,” he said.
According to him, it is an experience he prefers to keep private, emphasising that his wife is the best person to give details of what happened.
“Of course, I was aware of it, but since I did not talk about it back then and it is she who spoke about it, I still cannot,” he added.
Shakib explained that the miscarriage remains an emotional subject for him and that there are personal matters he does not find easy to disclose publicly.
He stated that since Zari had already spoken about the loss, he would rather let her explain further if she wishes, while he continues to handle the matter in silence.
“It is hard for me because there are some things I always prefer to keep to myself. She will explain more,” he added.

Zari Hassan, who is popularly known as the “Boss Lady”, is a mother of five children from her previous relationships.
Her marriage to Shakib, which has often been under public scrutiny, has attracted both criticism and admiration, with the pair frequently making headlines across East Africa.
Social media fallout
Shakib, who is currently in Kenya, has been engaging in a series of media interviews where he has spoken about his relationship with the socialite and reflected on how life has been since their 2023 white wedding.
In one of the interviews, he addressed the lingering question of why he and the media personality do not follow each other on Instagram.
Speaking to SPM Buzz on Monday, August 18, 2025, Shakib explained that they have not formally discussed the reasons behind the unfollow, noting that it has been a year since the move first occurred.
He added that his decision to unfollow was a reaction to Zari’s initial action, rather than a premeditated move.
“It has been about one year since we stopped following each other on Instagram. To be honest, I cannot explain the reason. I think the question of why we don’t follow each other is for her as well, and it is a tough one. We have never talked about it. My reason is that she unfollowed me first,” Shakib said.

Shakib also noted that while he would follow her back if she did the same, the matter is more complex than a simple social media action, highlighting that the situation remains unresolved in their personal discussions.
He insisted that the unfollowing should not be interpreted as a reflection of the state of their marriage, but rather a minor and nuanced aspect of their relationship in the public eye.
On that note, he acknowledged the attention the situation has generated on social media, where fans have debated the implications of their online behaviour.
“Well, it’s a tough question, but my reason is that she unfollowed me first. As for whether I would follow her today, I would, if she followed me. But again, it is a tough question,” he added.
