Betty Bayo’s husband breaks down in tears at Kenyatta Hospital following her death

Betty Bayo’s husband, Hiram Gitau, was unable to control his tears at the Kenyatta National Hospital on Monday, November 10, 2025, following a doctor’s confirmation that the renowned gospel singer had died.
Hiram, in a Facebook livestream by Pastor Victor Kanyari, Betty’s ex-husband, who had also arrived at the hospital, was seen wiping tears while letting out loud wails as a family representative delivered an official statement to the public.
Clad in goggles, Hiram repeatedly lifted them to wipe his tears, visibly overcome with grief as other family members and close friends surrounded him.
Minutes before, Hiram, alongside Kanyari and other family members, had held a press briefing where they confirmed Bayo’s passing.
A family representative, who spoke on their behalf, explained that Betty had been unwell since the previous week, battling acute leukaemia and suffering from excessive bleeding.
She revealed that she was initially taken to AAR Hospital on Kiambu Road before being transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital on Friday.
“We are here at Kenyatta National Hospital’s private wing. The spouse, the father of their children, and friends of Betty Bayo want to inform the public that today at 1:03 pm, we have lost Betty, and it is no longer a rumour. Betty had been unwell since last week, suffering from acute leukaemia and excessive bleeding. Despite the doctors’ best efforts, the family confirmed that she had passed away at 1:03 pm,” the representative said.

The representative also revealed that arrangements were being made to move her body to the KU referral hospital until burial, though the exact location of the burial was not disclosed.
“She was first taken to AAR Hospital on Kiambu Road before being transferred here on Friday. The doctors did their best, but the will of God has been fulfilled. We are planning to move her body to Kenyatta University Referral Hospital, and all communications will follow,” she added.
Tributes
Paying tribute to Betty Bayo, JCM head pastor Bishop Ben Kiengei, a close friend of the late singer, shared a heartfelt message on social media.
Bishop Kiengei described her life as one devoted to faith, music, and family.
“Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, famously known as Betty Bayo, rose to prominence after releasing her hit song Eleventh Hour, which was widely received for its encouraging message. She lived a life devoted to praising God and pursuing business, and remained a joyful artist until recently when she was diagnosed with blood cancer (leukaemia) at an advanced stage,” the preacher wrote.
He noted that she rose to prominence with her hit song Eleventh Hour, remained joyful and committed to her craft until her final days, and made significant contributions to the gospel music industry.
Bishop Kiengei also highlighted her mentorship of younger artistes and the lasting legacy she leaves behind, praising her inspiring character and unwavering dedication.
“She leaves behind a legacy of great contribution to the gospel music industry, friendship, and a soul that maximised its full potential. My condolences go to her mother, husband, siblings, friends, the music industry, and her beautiful children. Rest in peace, Betty Bayo; cancer will also die one day,” he added.
