The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has raised an alarm over the use of school uniforms as costumes in adult entertainment venues, calling the practice socially unacceptable, unlawful, and harmful to children.

In a statement released on Monday, August 18, 2025, KEWOPA condemned the trend, emphasising that school uniforms, which symbolise innocence, learning, and discipline, “must never be reduced to an object of adult fantasy or profit.” The association warned that the practice risks normalising the sexualisation of children and encourages underage drinking.

KEWOPA cited laws, including Section 46 of the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act (2010), the Children Act (2022), and the NACADA Alcoholic Drinks Control (Promotions) Guidelines, all of which prohibit advertisements that associate alcohol with minors or use school-related imagery.

The association urged regulatory bodies such as NACADA, the Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), and the Ministry of Interior to investigate and sanction offending establishments.

KEWOPA also called on club proprietors to issue public apologies and end exploitative practices, while urging the wider entertainment industry to uphold standards that protect children’s identities and dignity.

Local authorities were further urged to monitor venues closely and revoke licenses for those that continue promoting harmful practices.

KEWOPA stressed the symbolic value of school uniforms, noting that “school uniforms belong exclusively to children and should remain as such.”

The statement comes after many Kenyans expressed outrage online over the choice of dress, arguing that the use of school uniforms trivialises education.

The condemnation follows a viral clip from a Nakuru club showing staff in school uniforms in a promotional video, underscoring the urgent need for stricter regulation.

“The use of school uniforms in adult entertainment venues grossly distorts their true meaning and carries deeply troubling implications for our society,” the statement read.

“Protecting children is a collective responsibility, and we must create a society where their identities are preserved with respect, not exploited for profit.”
