Space Next Door, a club in Nakuru, has issued a public apology following widespread criticism of a video showing hostesses dressed in what appeared to be school uniforms.

The post, shared on the club’s social media page, quickly went viral, prompting concerns over its perceived insensitivity and the potential promotion of negative behaviour.

Themed nights under scrutiny

In a statement posted on the club’s Instagram page on Sunday, August 17, 2025, the club stated, “Space Next Door acknowledges the video currently circulating on social media and wishes to address the concerns it has raised. We would like to clarify that at no point do we promote or endorse any of the claims being associated with this video.”

The management explained that the video was part of their “themed nights,” which feature creative concepts connecting with society and celebrating different professions and careers.

Examples include nurses’ scrubs, mechanics’ gear, and chefs’ attire. The club emphasised that the intention was to create fun, engaging, and respectful experiences while highlighting everyday roles in a positive and entertaining way.

They added, We recognise that the timing of its release was unfortunate given the current situation in the country. We therefore wish to emphasise that Space Next Door does not, in any way, encourage or promote the negative interpretations being made.”

Public backlash and apology

The apology comes after many Kenyans expressed outrage online over the choice of dress, arguing that the use of school uniforms trivialises education and could be seen as promoting the sexualization of minors.

The hashtag #SpaceNextDoor trended on social media, with calls for boycotts and for authorities to take action against the club.

In response, Space Next Door offered an apology for any negative interpretations and reiterated its commitment to professionalism and community connection.

The statement concluded, We sincerely apologise for any negative misinterpretation that the video may have caused. We remain committed to maintaining high standards of professionalism, creativity, and community connection in everything we do.”
