Former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has urged Kenyans to be sincere and thank God for having one of the best presidents.

Speaking to a local TV station on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, Sossion said that President William Ruto cannot and will not stop meeting with civil servant groups.

He added that such meetings, whether at State House or elsewhere, serve as a link to proper public participation.

“We should be very happy that we have a very pragmatic and progressive president who allows people to discuss their issues. When we say, Oh, this matter must be in Parliament, we will be violating the principles of public participation,” Sossion said.

He stressed that the State House is the people’s institution, and citizens are free to engage the Head of State on key national matters at any time.

Highlighting the recent meeting where teachers were hosted at State House, Sossion said, “It has never happened that teachers are privileged to have a high-level policy meeting with the president, like it happened yesterday. To me, the event that happened was by design from what the president did in 2022 by negotiating and signing a charter with education stakeholders.”

Teachers’ progress praised

Sossion also celebrated the achievements of teachers over the years.

“You must check facts. I have been in this space negotiating and fighting for teachers, and I have seen teachers rise economically, from using bicycles to driving cars to school because of improved salaries. Any improvement in terms of pay is a good thing,” he said.

He further noted that President Ruto’s review of salaries in 2023 and 2025, as well as last Saturday, and compressing the duration of the Competency-Based Education (CBE) from four years to a shorter period, is a milestone not only for teachers but also for workers across the board.

“That policy is going to work across the country. Any union worth being called a union representing workers should celebrate any slight achievement of that magnitude. It is phenomenal because it will benefit all workers, not only teachers,” Sossion said.
