Tatiana Karanja explains why motherhood is more than just changing diapers

Content creator Tatiana Karanja has shared a heartfelt message explaining that motherhood is about much more than the daily tasks of raising children.

She said she wanted to give more context after a conversation on the Its Related I Promise podcast about friendship and motherhood. According to Tatiana, she decided to speak more openly after noticing one message kept coming up.

Tatiana said one comment stayed with her after the discussion.

“I wish you’d stop tiptoeing around what motherhood actually feels like,” Tatiana Karanja said on Monday, June 29, 2026.

She explained that her message was not meant to compare different lives or suggest that mothers have it harder than everyone else. She also made it clear that she was not trying to convince anyone to become a parent. Instead, she said she simply wanted to describe an experience that is difficult to fully understand without living it.

“This is simply one mum trying to put words to something that I don’t think can ever truly be understood until you’ve lived it,” Tatiana explained.

The invisible side of parenting

Tatiana said that while many families in Kenya are lucky to receive help with practical parenting duties, that is not the part she was talking about. She explained that the biggest challenge is the constant responsibility that comes with being a mother. She described it as the thinking, the worrying and the invisible mental load that never truly ends.

“It’s the responsibility. The thinking. The worrying. The invisible mental load. The part that never clocks out. The part nobody else can carry for you,” Tatiana said.

She also reflected on how motherhood changes with time. She said parents slowly learn to ask for help, share responsibilities and protect their own time. However, she noted that no one begins the journey already knowing how to handle every challenge that comes with raising a child.

“There isn’t a degree in parenting. There isn’t a handbook. There isn’t a manual,” Tatiana said.

She added that parents are expected to learn as they go because every stage of a child’s life brings something different. Just when they think they have figured things out, children grow, and new challenges appear.
