Wetang’ula slams Gachagua over diaspora remarks

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has strongly rebuked former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over his recent comments urging Kenyans abroad to stop sending money back home, calling the remarks “clueless and reckless.”
Speaking during a public event in Muhoroni on Friday, July 25, 2025, Wetang’ula reminded leaders that diaspora remittances are lifelines for families, not government coffers.
In a statement shared via his official social media accounts in the wee hours of Saturday, July 26, 2025, Wetang’ula further urged Gachagua to return to the country and focus on constructive politics rather than issuing divisive statements from abroad.
“Today in Muhoroni, I called out former Deputy President Gachagua for telling Kenyans abroad to stop sending money home, remarks that are clueless and reckless. Kenyans send money to families, not the government. Gachagua should return home and stick to his usual politics,” Wetang’ula stated.

Broad-based government
Wetang’ula also highlighted the shift in development focus under the current broad-based government, noting that regions like Kisumu and Western Kenya—historically underserved—are now seeing tangible progress.
“I also noted that while some regions have long seen development, Kisumu and Western Kenya are now benefiting under a more inclusive government. Every Kenyan deserves progress,” he stated.
He concluded his statement by commending Kisumu residents for conducting peaceful demonstrations, setting an example for responsible civic engagement.
“Lastly, I praised Kisumu residents for protesting peacefully without resorting to violence, proving it’s possible to dissent responsibly,” Wetang’ula wrote on his X and Facebook accounts.

Gachagua US tour
Gachagua began a two-month tour of the United States on July 9, 2025. His itinerary includes stops in Dallas, California, Seattle, Boston, and Baltimore, where he is engaging with Kenyan diaspora communities and American business leaders.
While away, Gachagua has been impressed by the work done by his foot soldiers holding fort for him as he sways the diaspora voters and businessmen into buying into his vision for Kenya ahead of the 2027 polls.
Gachagua is set to officially launch his DCP party upon return and also work on the modalities of settling on a single presidential candidate to field during the 2027 general elections.
