Westlands Member of Parliament (MP) Tim Wanyonyi has called for action after a wall under construction collapsed in Nairobi’s Parklands area, killing two workers.

Taking to his official X account on Wednesday, May 14, 2025, Wanyonyi urged contractors to respect and stick to the required construction standards.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker went ahead to call on the Nairobi county leadership and national government to tighten approval processes and supervision of construction projects to protect innocent lives.

He also expressed concerns that cases of walls collapsing at construction sites have become a recurrent issue that calls for immediate action.

“My sincere condolences to the families that lost their loved ones following the tragic collapse of a wall at a construction site on Parklands-Suswa Road. Contractors need to respect and stick to the required construction standards! We have been following up with line departments as it’s becoming a recurrent issue, and we will not tire until our county leadership and national government tighten approval processes and supervision of construction projects to protect innocent lives,” Wanyonyi stated.

Parklands wall collapse

At least two workers lost their lives on Saturday, May 10, 2025, when the wall of a house under construction collapsed on them in Nairobi’s Parklands area.

According to reports, the wall had been constructed to form part of the basement of the structure along Suswa Road when the incident happened.

Police, however, blamed the rains that were experienced in the area on Saturday, May 10, 2025, for the incident.

Other officials said the wall was built on the beacons of the land, endangering other neighbours.

Condemned site

Nairobi County Chief Officer in charge of Urban Planning and Development, Patrick Analo, said in a statement that the site had been condemned.

“The developer is required to present himself to authorities for further interrogation,” Analo said.

According to Analo, several workers had been arrested at the same site for undertaking an excavation without approved architectural building plans.

The Parklands incident happened barely a week after a female worker died after falling from the fifth floor of a building under construction in Nairobi’s Kariokor area.

Police said the incident happened at the site along Gen Waruinge Road as the woman was busy at work.
