Why your ears pop during elevator rides

Step into a fast elevator in one of Nairobi’s high-rise towers, and by the time you reach the top floors, your ears often feel full, muffled, or slightly tight.

This sensation is a common daily experience for city office workers, but it is actually a natural biological reaction to rapid changes in air pressure.

The pressure shift inside your ear

Earth’s atmospheric pressure drops as you move higher above sea level. When you ride a fast elevator up a tall building, the air pressure inside the car drops quickly to match the rising altitude.

However, the air pressure inside your middle ear, which is the small air-filled space located directly behind your eardrum, remains at the higher pressure level from the ground floor.

Because the air inside your ear is now at a higher pressure than the air around you, it pushes outward against your flexible eardrum. This pressure difference stretches the membrane, causing that clogged or heavy feeling.

According to medical research published in StatPearls, “the primary function of the Eustachian tube is to equalize air pressure between the atmosphere and the middle ear.”

Without this natural pressure adjustment, trapped air would continue to strain the delicate membrane.

How a swallow restores balance

Your body balances this air pressure difference using the Eustachian tube, a narrow channel about three to four millimetres wide that connects the middle ear to the back of your throat.

Most of the time, this tube stays closed to protect the middle ear from throat fluids and loud internal body sounds.

When you swallow, yawn, or chew, small muscles in the back of your throat contract and pull the Eustachian tube open for a fraction of a second.

This brief opening allows a tiny burst of trapped air to escape from your middle ear into your throat. As the air pressure on both sides of the eardrum equalises, the membrane snaps back into its relaxed position.

That quick movement is the pop you hear and feel. Sipping water or chewing gum while riding tall commercial lifts keeps those throat muscles working, ensuring your ears stay comfortable on the way up.
