Several people are feared dead after a passenger vehicle ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Mandera County.

According to a police report, the matatu was travelling from Arabia to Mandera when it hit the device leaving five people dead.

The incident took place 8 Kilometers from Mandera town.

“Today, January 31 at about 0730HRS, a civilian vehicle plying Arabia- Mandera route that was ferrying members of the public to Mandera was attacked by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED),” the police report reads.

After the explosion, six attackers who have said to be behind the incident reportedly sprayed bullets on the wreck of the matatu using PK Machine guns and RPG Machine guns

Though the police say that they have only recorded five deaths, they believe they will discover more bodies at the scene due to the extent of the attack.

The attackers are said to have eloped towards the Somalia border after General Service Unit (GSU) officers who responded to the attack arrived at the scene.

About five bodies were found scattered at the scene while five people were found alive with various degrees of injuries.

The incident comes a day after an intelligence report revealed that there are several Al-Shabaab fighters spotted in North Eastern by herders.
