Sonko celebrates Gift Osinya’s graduation after narrow escape from hands of Al-Shabaab

Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has shared a heartfelt congratulatory message to Gift Osinya, who is his adopted son, after graduating from Scott Christian University.
In a post on his official X account on Saturday, December 6, 2025, the former legislator recalled Gift’s past encounter with the Al-Shabab militia in the 2014 Al-Shabab attack in Mombasa County.
On his part, Sonko, while congratulating him, described the moment as one of a kind, filled with a great second chance in life, just when darkness tried to swallow him and his family.
“See God!! The God of miracles. The God of second chances. The same God who held Gift and Satrine when darkness tried to swallow them. If this is not God, then what is? Today, Gift Osinya graduates from Scott Christian University, a moment only God could write,” Sonko said.
Sonko went on describing Gift’s past narrow escape from the hands of the Al-Shabaab, where her mother, Satrine, was shot in the head by the militia, leaving behind two sons, a moment that turned their life.

At the time, Sonko explained how the then-young Gift stood strong after the tragedy, holding on to his baby brother and rebuilding their lives from ashes.
“Many remember their story: tragedy struck, Satrine was shot in the head by Al-Shabab, and young Gift stood strong like a lion. God spared them, healed them, lifted them, and rebuilt their lives from ashes,” Sonko wrote.
Worth noting, at the time the tragedy struck, the now Nairobi ex-governor adopted Gift and fathered him. Sonko expressed his pride in Gift while describing his journey as living proof that God still performs wonders.
“To survive that storm and stand here today is nothing short of divine. Gift’s journey is living proof that God still performs wonders. Gift, my son, we are proud. This is just the beginning. God’s hand is on you, and every dream He placed in you will come to pass,” Sonko wrote.
Likoni 2014 attack
Notably, Gift Osinya is the brother of three-year-old baby Satrin, who survived a gun attack at a Likoni church on March 3, 2014.
At the time, at least six people died in the raid, including 18-month-old Satrin Osinya’s mother.
After the attack, reports by doctors indicated that the bullet, which killed her mother while she was shielding her son, exited her body and buried itself in his head during the attack.
Gift and Satrin were attending a church service at Joy Church in Likoni when it was attacked. They lost their mother, Veronica Atieno.
Sonko adopted the two children a month after Satrin underwent brain surgery at the Kenyatta National Hospital to remove the bullet lodged in his head.
