Nyutu to Ruto: National resources are not your personal property

Muranga Senator Joe Nyutu has called out President William Ruto for withholding developments in some regions while deliberately prioritizing development in Nyanza regions as a move to secure votes.

Speaking during an interview with a local media house on Monday, September 22, 2025, Nyutu accused Ruto of selecting regions to develop based on the good relationships of their leaders with the Head of State.

“Mediocrity is when you think the national resources are personal resources to be dispensed to people who please you and people who sing praises to you, because that is what the president was saying in Machakos,” Nyutu said.

On his part, the Muranga Senator further criticized Ruto’s recent Machakos trip, where he made his remarks on developments; however, according to Nyutu, Ruto deliberately left Machakos development programs while focusing on the Nyanza region due to a lack of political support from the region.

“He insinuated that you people are not getting as many markets or as many development programs as the people of Nyanza because you are not supporting me,” Nyutu said.

While calling out the Head of State, Nyutu noted that no leader needs to please the president for his people to get development, as it is their right to be developed.

‘No leader needs to please the president for his people to get development. It is their right,” he added.

Nyutu further accused Ruto of deliberately prioritizing development in Nyanza while sidelining other regions, in what he described as a politically motivated strategy to secure votes ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“We must call out bribery. We know that President Ruto, because he lost his major support in 2022, is now concentrating on Nyanza, and that is why most of the development projects he is actually talking about are in Nyanza, because that is the next avenue where he thinks he’ll be able to peddle his life to get re-elected,” Nyutu said.

Nyutu scolds Ruto over stalled projects

“He has previously tried to shift blame for stalled projects in Ukambani onto leaders like Kalonzo Musyoka, while praising accelerated projects in Nyanza because leaders there allegedly support him,” Nyutu added.

Nyutu warned that such selective development undermines national cohesion and accountability. “Development should not be a tool to win votes or reward loyalty. Every region has a right to progress, and leadership must respect that,” he said.

The Senator also noted concerns about Ruto’s political strategy in Nyanza, suggesting that the President’s focus on the region was tied to plans for a running mate ahead of the 2027 elections.

“It is clear that accelerated development in Nyanza is less about the people’s needs and more about creating political leverage,” Nyutu said.

He further added, “Every Kenyan deserves access to resources and development regardless of political affiliation.”
