Trans-Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has urged Kenyans to treat the Luhya community with respect, emphasising that they should not be approached only when domestic workers are needed or during election periods.

Speaking in Luanda, Vihiga, on Saturday, September 27, 2025, Natembeya reflected on the historical marginalisation of the Luhya community, particularly in economic and social spheres.

He highlighted that while the community forms one of the largest in the country, it has often been neglected in terms of employment, infrastructure, and political inclusion.

Kila mtu anajua watu wetu wanatafutwa pale tu inapohitajika mfanyakazi wa nyumba. Leo hii mama akijifungua, wanakuja kutafuta mluhya; mtu akikufa sisi ndio tunatafutwa kuchimba kaburi,” Natembeya said, stressing that respect must extend beyond traditional domestic roles.

He further noted the structural challenges facing the western region, pointing out that generations of Luhyas have completed education but still face limited employment opportunities.

“Since 1963, the government has continuously sidelined the Luhya; factories in the western region are few; our youth finish school and find nothing, opportunities are scarce, and this must change,” he added.

Natembeya also criticised the political exploitation of his community, warning against leaders who only engage during elections to secure votes.

“During elections, people will come to buy votes. When it comes to you, take it because it’s your tax, but your vote is your right, do not be swayed by short-term favours,” he said, urging the community to assert their dignity and rights.

He concluded by calling on both the government and citizens to ensure equitable treatment for the Luhya across all sectors, not just in domestic work.

“We want the dignity of the Luhya to be restored. Our people deserve to live better lives and contribute fully to national development,” Natembeya said.
