Former Senior Economic Adviser to President William Ruto, Moses Kuria, has said that he does not need to hold a government position to create a meaningful impact in society.

Speaking during a local television interview on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, Kuria looked back on his time in public service, saying he remains proud of the reforms he initiated while serving in different roles, including as Cabinet Secretary for Trade.

He pointed out that during his tenure, he made significant attempts to address industrial development and reform the National Youth Service (NYS), efforts he believes stand out in the country’s history.

Although he was never given a clear explanation for his removal from Cabinet, Kuria said he left office with a sense of accomplishment, describing his 20 months in government as a period he will always take pride in. According to him, leadership and impact are not limited to holding official positions.

He emphasised that he is already pursuing initiatives outside government that contribute to societal progress, noting that he feels fulfilled and empowered to continue serving Kenyans in his capacity.

He said he remains proud of the reforms he attempted while serving in different capacities, including as Cabinet Secretary for Trade.

“There was no explanation given as to why I was removed as CS. Nobody has ever made a stab at Industrial in this country, as Moses Kuria, when I was minister for trade. That’s a fact that will go down on record. Nobody tried to reform NYS the way I tried to reform. For the 20 months I was in Cabinet, I am very proud, I walk with my head high, and I sleep very soundly. I am a firm believer that I don’t have to be in government to make positive changes in society. I am making positive changes in my humble way outside government,” he stated.

Not fired

Kuria dismissed claims that he was fired from his advisory role, insisting that he decided to step down. He revealed that the turning point came after the chaotic Saba Saba protests held on July 7, 2025.

The demonstrations, which were marred by violence and looting, left him deeply unsettled. According to Kuria, both the government and the opposition traded accusations over who was responsible for the chaos. Opposition leaders alleged that the state orchestrated the unrest, while government officials firmly denied any involvement.

Caught between the conflicting claims, Kuria said he felt he could no longer continue in his role.

“I resigned a day after Saba Saba because the events of that day shattered me. Opposition claimed that it was the government behind the looting and violence during the protests, but when I asked the government, they denied it. I did not know who to believe, so I decided to sit on the pedestal where I can be able to see things clearly,” he explained.
