Former Chief Justice David Maraga has expressed his satisfaction with not being an advisor to President William Ruto.

Responding to a question during a public lecture at Rongo University on Thursday, March 27, 2025, about what advice he would offer Ruto amidst the country’s current challenges, Maraga said that if he were advising the president, he would tell him to listen to Kenyans.

“Somebody has asked what I would have asked the president to do in this deteriorating state of affairs. I am happy I am not his advisor, but if I were to offer advice, I would ask him to listen to Kenyans,” Maraga said.

Call on Ruto

In addition to Maraga, former President Uhuru Kenyatta also called on Ruto’s administration to be more attentive to the needs and grievances of citizens.

Speaking during the Thanksgiving service of the newly ordained Bishop of the Archdiocese of Meru, Jackson Murugara, at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Sunday, March 23, 2025, Kenyatta emphasised the importance of leadership that is responsive to the people’s cries and challenges.

He also encouraged the congregation to pray for the country and its leaders, hoping they would open their hearts and ears to truly hear the voices and concerns of the people they serve.

This loosely translates to:

“Let us also continue praying for our leaders because we must pray for them. But we should also pray that our leaders open their ears and hearts to hear the cries of the citizens they lead,” he stated.

Maraga’s political ambitions

Speaking at the People Dialogue Festival on Thursday, March 6, 2025, Maraga emphasised that his hypothetical presidency would prioritise the rule of law above all else.

“If I were to be given the privilege to govern this country, I would get everybody to obey the law. The moment you have everybody obeying the law, everything will fall into place,” he said.

“The moment you get everybody obeying the law, the question of money going, or not going, through the consolidated fund would end. The moment of diverting funds from a given project to another would end, and the country would run smoothly.”
