Itumbi offers govt job to KK Mwenyewe’s friend Kafengo after burial drama

Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy, Dennis Itumbi, has offered a government job to Kafengo, the close friend and longtime collaborator of the late comedian KK Mwenyewe.
Speaking during KK’s burial in Lari, Kiambu County, on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, Itumbi said Kafengo would be employed to help in the government’s digital content creation efforts starting next week.
“Kafengo amekuwa akifanya kazi na KK Mwenyewe, na watu wengi kwa mtandao wameniambia tusaidiane na yeye. Sasa, mimi nitachukua Kafengo. Nimpatie kazi ili aweze kusaidia kuaddress mambo ya digital content creation na iyo kazi ataanza Monday,” Itumbi said.
The announcement came as a surprise to many and was welcomed by some of KK’s fans and fellow creators who knew the strong working relationship between the two content creators.
This comes after a tense moment earlier in the funeral, where Itumbi faced hostility from a section of the mourners while giving his speech. The situation escalated when he spoke about government efforts to support content creators, particularly around the issue of monetisation.
“All these issues that content creators have mentioned here about what the government should do for the content creation space are the very things I have been championing. The first major challenge that content creators face, and how they will earn from the content they create, is monetisation,” he said.
The mention of monetisation sparked a wave of jeers, with chants of “Wantam” ringing through the crowd. One mourner shouted, “Unatudanganya buana!” accusing Itumbi of making empty promises to creatives.
Trying to defend his remarks, Itumbi said, “I do not think these content creators are here for Wantam nonsense. Content creation is a lifetime commitment.” But this only triggered louder chants of “uongo, uongo,” forcing him to pause his speech.
The master of ceremonies stepped in to try and restore calm.
“Naomba tafadhali, tafadhali tusikilizane. Si pia tumepea hawa wengine nafasi waongee,” the MC pleaded with the crowd.
Attempting to regain control of the moment, Itumbi promised that creators whose Facebook pages had not yet been monetised would receive support through the President Creatives email platform. He also revealed that popular digital creator Kabugi would lead the formation of a Sacco to help structure government support for online talents.
The burial ceremony, which drew hundreds of mourners including fellow content creators, fans, and family, was a mix of sorrow and frustration.
KK Mwenyewe rose to fame through his viral comic impersonations of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
