Mbappé pens emotional tribute to coach Deschamps ahead of World Cup last dance

France captain Kylian Mbappé has shared a deep emotional tribute to departing head coach Didier Deschamps, describing him as “one of the greatest legends” of French football ahead of their final World Cup outing together.
Deschamps, a World Cup winner himself as a player in 1998 and as a coach in 2018, is set to guide the team for the final time this Saturday, July 18, 2026, when France takes on England in the third-place play-off in Miami
End of an Era!
The clash brings the curtain down on Deschamps’ legendary 14-year reign. For the Real Madrid superstar, it is a deeply personal farewell to the mentor who handed him his international breakthrough, trusted him with the captain’s armband, and placed him at the heart of France’s historic runs across three consecutive World Cups.

Reflecting on the looming departure following France’s semi-final exit, Mbappé took to social media to express his profound gratitude to the tactician who handed him his international debut.

“Today is your last dance,” Mbappé wrote. “You who gave us so much. We should have offered you a better ending, but we failed. Putting words to what you brought over 14 years is very difficult, so major an actor were you in the revival of this team?”
Deschamps, who took over the national team in 2012, famously guided France to World Cup glory in 2018 and the final in 2022.
Legacy and greatness
Despite facing intense tactical scrutiny and conflicting appreciation over his tenure, Mbappé insisted that the manager’s legacy remains completely untouchable.
“People haven’t always known how to appreciate your greatness, but time and history will take care of that,” the Real Madrid forward added.
“Thank you for giving me the chance and opportunity to represent my country on the biggest stage for so many years. I feel privileged to have been able to stand alongside one of the greatest legends of our country, and I hold only excellent memories of everything we lived through and accomplished together.”
Concluding his message, the French skipper backed the iconic coach for success in his next chapter away from the national dugout.
“I wish you the best in your new adventure, and thank you again for everything you brought to this jersey that means so much to us.”
