Manchester United’s first preseason test got off to a wrong footing with a narrow 1-0 loss to Championship side Wrexham at the Olympic Stadium in Helsinki, Finland, on Saturday, July 18, 2026

A squad of first-team regulars conceded the decisive first-half goal before manager Michael Carrick made 11 changes for the second period, allowing a wave of academy players to impress despite failing to find an equaliser.

Team news

The Championship outfit hit the front in the 38th minute after some neat, intricate play down the left wing ended with a low cross rolled into the path of Sam Smith, who converted clinically at the back post.

The first half saw Harry Maguire partner Ayden Heaven in central defense, with the experienced Tom Heaton deployed between the posts as the last line of defense.

French youngster Leny Yoro and England international Luke Shaw provided cover from the flanks. Heaven was credited with the game’s first meaningful defensive intervention, tracking back in time to thwart a Wrexham striker inside the box with a perfectly timed sliding tackle.

Santos makes United’s debut

The clash also provided a non-competitive bow for highly anticipated summer arrival Andrey Santos following his high-profile switch from Chelsea.

The Ksh7.95 billion signing partnered Jack Fletcher in a two-man midfield anchor, sitting just behind an attacking trio of Mason Mount, Bryan Mbeumo, and Patrick Dorgu.

Santos offered United fans a glimpse of what he will bring to the engine room, turning in a composed performance highlighted by assured progression and exceptional calmness under tight pressure.

The Brazilian also caught the eye out of possession; he never shied away from pressing high, chasing down opponents, and fighting to win the ball back.

By the time he was substituted at the break, Santos had registered 55 touches, 10 carries, 3 passes into the final third, 2 chances created, 2 fouls won, and a 93 per cent passing accuracy, alongside winning 4 of his 6 contested duels.

Academy players impress

Carrick opted for a completely revamped, youth-centric lineup for the second half, with Tyler Fletcher handed the captain’s armband.

The young Reds dominated possession in the early exchanges, save for a rare Wrexham counter-attack where goalkeeper Radek Vitek did brilliantly to spare United the blushes of going two goals down.

Left-back Harry Amass was among the standout performers of the second-half group, putting in a tireless shift defensively while repeatedly threatening with dangerous crosses from the left flank.

United faithful will, however, have to wait a little longer to see their other new arrivals in action.

Striker Joshua Zirkzee started the match, but summer signing Benjamin Šeško remained behind in England to work on his individual fitness.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Karl Darlow and midfielder Youri Tielemans did not travel, with the Belgian still on holiday following his country’s FIFA World Cup elimination by Spain in the round of 16.

A total of 22 United players were involved.
