I am deeply heartbroken: Kericho governor reacts to Litein Boys High School destruction

Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has expressed deep sorrow following the destruction of Litein Boys High School, his alma mater, after a student rampage left key facilities in ruins on Sunday, September 21, 2025.
In a post on Facebook on Monday, September 22, 2025, the governor said the arson attack has put at stake the cherished memories and treasured moments of an institution that has for over a century moulded boys into men.
“I am deeply heartbroken by last night’s unfortunate events at my alma mater, Litein Boys High School. The destruction of sections of the school through arson has put at stake our cherished memories and treasured moments,” Mutai wrote.

He noted that a heritage nurtured for generations was lost in a single day of blind rage, even though the current group of students may have faltered.
Mutai, however, assured stakeholders that despite the destruction, he remains committed to guiding the boys of Litein into the men they are destined to become.
“A heritage nurtured for over a century has been reduced in a single day of blinded rage. For generations, this great institution has moulded boys into men, and though the current lot may have faltered, we remain committed to guiding them into the men they are destined to become,” he added.

He has further urged security agencies and the school’s Board of Management to ensure that those behind the arson are brought to book.
He added that together with the alumni and the community, efforts will be made to rebuild Litein Boys High School, stressing that the institution will rise again despite the painful setback.

“I urge our security agencies and the school board of management to ensure the culprits are brought to book. And yes, together, we shall rebuild Litein Boys High School again.”
The Sunday night rampage left major facilities in ruins. The administration block, science laboratories and computer labs were set ablaze, while the school bus was vandalised and left with shattered windows.
The office of Principal Richard Sang was also destroyed, with threat messages scribbled on the walls.
Reports indicated that the unrest was linked to dissatisfaction with the leadership of the principal and his deputy. This marks the second time in a year that Litein Boys High School has been rocked by violent student unrest.
