Fire has destroyed a dormitory at St. Michael Primary School in Kerugoya, Kirinyaga County, leaving about 60 pupils without accommodation.

The blaze broke out on Sunday, September 14, 2025, around 9 am, prompting an emergency response from the county fire brigade and local residents.

Confirming the incident, Kerugoya Chief Justus Mwai said the dormitory, which housed about 60 learners, was completely razed.

He assured parents that all pupils were safe, noting that none of the children were inside the building when the fire erupted and that no injuries were reported.

“The fire was successfully contained by the Kirinyaga County Fire Brigade with the support of local residents,” Mwai said.

Preliminary findings

Preliminary findings point to a possible electrical fault as the cause, though authorities have launched a detailed investigation to determine the actual trigger.

Kerugoya Chief Justus Mwai urged parents to remain calm as officials work with the school management to address the aftermath.

When contacted for comment, Kirinyaga County Director of Education Joshua Mwangi did not immediately comment on the matter, citing a meeting engagement.

County Commissioner Hussein Allasow referred K24 Digital to Kirinyaga Central Deputy County Commissioner Josephine Mwengi, whose phone went unanswered.

Meanwhile, Kerugoya Ward MCA Eric Muchina urged the county government to strengthen fire preparedness in all sub-counties.

“I have consistently insisted that each sub-county in Kirinyaga must have a fire engine to respond to such emergencies,” Muchina said.
