Former Nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba has jolted Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, accusing him of abusing public office by attending the swearing-in ceremony of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan using taxpayers’ money.

Speaking during an interview on a local TV station on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, Orwoba described Kindiki’s trip as an impeachable offence, arguing that his presence and demeanor at the event symbolised betrayal of the Kenyan people and disregard for national integrity.

“The fact that DP Kithure Kindiki used taxpayers’ money to attend Samia Suluhu’s swearing-in and even clapped and smiled as Kenyans were accused of disrupting Tanzania’s democratic process, is an impeachable offence,” she said.

Orwoba expressed outrage that Kindiki would sit without protest following President Suluhu’s accusations that the anti-polls protests were infiltrated by foreigners.

“Our Deputy President got into a flight, went over there, sat down, smiled and clapped when that woman, the President, said it was foreigners, alluding that it was Kenyans, who had come in to disrupt their democratic process,” Orwoba said.

“The fact that he went there with taxpayers’ money and clapped when we were being accused, for me, that is an impeachable offence.”

Speaking during her swearing-in ceremony for a second term in office on Monday, November 3, 2025, in Dodoma, Samia said that some of the people arrested during the recent unrest in the country are foreigners.

“Wote tunaoitakia mema nchi hii, tumehuzunishwa na matukio ya uvunjifu wa amani, upotevu wa maisha na uharibifu wa mali kwenye baadhi ya maeneo. Kilichotokea hakiendani na taswira na sifa za Kitanzania, na sio Utanzania. Haikutushangaza kuona kuwa baadhi ya vijana waliokamatwa wametoka nje ya Tanzania, she said.

But the former senator argued that the DP is constitutionally required to embody national unity, dignity, and the defense of human rights. She said his conduct in Tanzania contradicted those expectations.

“As a Deputy President, he is supposed to be a symbol of national unity, a person who pushes this nation to stand by the Constitution. Just by him being there, clapping and smiling when people have been killed and murdered, it was very sad,” she said.

Tainting Kenya’s diplomacy?

Orwoba further suggested that Kindiki’s visit to Tanzania was not a mere diplomatic gesture but a politically tone-deaf move that undermines Kenya’s moral authority in regional affairs.

She warned that future regimes must hold leaders accountable for what she termed careless misuse of public office.

“Let me tell you something, the next regime will not tolerate this kind of impunity. Leaders must understand that being in office means standing for Kenya, not embarrassing it abroad,” Orwoba said.

Moreover, on the other hand, President William Ruto extended heartfelt congratulations to President Samia Suluhu Hassan after she was officially declared the country’s first elected female president on Saturday, November 1, 2025.

In his statement on Monday, November 3, 2025, the Head of State highlighted the significance of the milestone while urging Tanzanians to uphold peace and the rule of law.

“This is a historic moment not only for Tanzania but for the entire East African region. I congratulate Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan on her election victory and call upon the people of Tanzania to maintain peace and respect democratic institutions,” Ruto said.

Ruto emphasised that the peaceful resolution of political differences is critical for stability and prosperity, adding that the two countries share common aspirations for regional integration, peace, and economic prosperity.

“Kenya remains ready to continue engaging constructively with Tanzania in pursuit of our shared vision for a peaceful, prosperous, and integrated East Africa,” he said.
