Homa Bay Town Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Kaluma on Thursday, September 4, 2025, accused former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i of lacking respect for human rights.

Through his X handle, Kaluma openly criticised Matiang’i, saying Kenyans should not even think of supporting leaders with his kind of record.

“On top of being corrupt, tribal, and brutal, broke Matiang’i lacks respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

“He should have a date with Yvonne Okwara to answer some questions,” Kaluma wrote.

The undated Matiang’i clip

Kaluma’s criticism came alongside the sharing of an undated video clip where Matiang’i is captured addressing journalists during a tense political moment in 2018.

In the clip, Matiang’i is heard issuing stern warnings to those who intended to attend the mock swearing-in of then NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga.

In the same media briefing, Matiang’i also warned media houses against attempting to air the event live.

“The widescale investigations targeting individuals and organisations, which include, but are not limited to, certain media houses.

“We will act decisively but stick to the law. As long as those investigations continue, specific actions will remain in place.

“For instance, some media houses remain shut until we have completed some of the investigations we are carrying out,” Matiang’i is heard saying in the clip.

The remarks, which came during his tenure as one of the most powerful CSs under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, continue to spark debate over his handling of civil liberties and press freedom.

Opposition politics

Kaluma’s attack comes at a time when the opposition is under pressure to maintain unity in its bid to send President William Ruto home after one term.

Analysts believe that if leaders in the opposition camp close ranks and remain united, Ruto will face a stiff challenge in 2027.

However, some reports have suggested that Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka could be courted by Ruto’s camp ahead of the next election, raising questions about how cohesive the opposition will remain.
