Wicknell Chivayo visits Samia Suluhu, pays tribute after husband’s death

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo has paid a condolence visit to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan following the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan.

In an Instagram post on Friday, September 11, 2026, Chivayo shared details of his visit, saying he went to comfort President Samia following the heartbreaking loss of her husband, who died on Monday, September 7, 2026, while receiving treatment in Zanzibar.

Hafidh was later laid to rest in Zanzibar on the same day, with his death prompting messages of condolence from leaders and public figures across the region.

Chivayo was accompanied by his wife during the visit, where they met President Samia and conveyed their condolences.

Chivayo remembers Hafidh

Reflecting on his relationship with the late Hafidh, Chivayo described him as a humble, wise and loving man who treated him with warmth whenever he visited Zanzibar.

“Baba Hafidh was a wonderful man, a devoted husband, a true and exceptional father figure to all of us,” Chivayo said.

He recalled their conversations, saying the late Hafidh always had words of wisdom to share and had a calm personality that made people feel comfortable in his presence.

“He was a man who did not need noise or attention to command respect, as his unique calm character, kindness and fatherly nature spoke for him,” he added.

Consoles President Samia

Chivayo also acknowledged the difficult loss faced by President Samia and the wider family following Hafidh’s death.

He said the loss of a husband and life companion was immeasurable, while the loss of a father leaves a space within a family that cannot easily be replaced.

He prayed that the memories shared with Hafidh over the years would give President Samia, her children and the wider family strength during the difficult period.

A gentle soul

Chivayo described Hafidh as a “great parent, a father figure, a man of wisdom and a gentle soul”, saying his legacy would live on through the family he loved and the people whose lives he touched.

He ended his message by offering prayers to President Samia and her family.

“May Almighty God grant them strength, comfort and peace as they mourn this tremendous loss,” he wrote.

Chivayo’s visit comes as several prominent figures have travelled to Tanzania to offer condolences to President Samia and her family following the death of Hafidh.
