Gachagua reveals real motive behind push to split Kiambu from Mt Kenya

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has launched a fresh attack on President William Ruto, claiming the Head of State is plotting to shift Meru and Kiambu counties into the North Eastern region as part of a wider political scheme.
Speaking during a church service at PCEA Ongata Rongai in Kajiado County on Sunday, August 31, 2025, Gachagua claimed that residents from both counties were ferried to State House for meetings where each participant received Ksh10,000.
He said the money was meant to lobby support for a scheme to detach Kiambu from Mt. Kenya and push Meru towards northern Kenya.
“After that, they invited people from Meru and gave each of them Ksh10,000 so that Meru could be detached from Mt. Kenya and aligned with Mandera and Isiolo,” Gachagua claimed.
The former DP also said that more than 5,000 people from Kiambu were taken to State House and offered the same amount to back Ruto’s plan. He claimed the attendees accepted the money but went home chanting “one term” in protest.

“The State House is the place for corruption and bribery. They took the money and went home singing ‘one term,’” he declared.
Reject political bribery
Gachagua urged Kenyans to accept such cash handouts but resist following the political directives attached to them, arguing that refusing to comply was not wrong.
“I told people to take the money because it is not a debt, and it does not have a receipt. But it will be a mistake to take such a bribe and do as you are told,” he said.
Gachagua’s remarks come after Kikuyu Member of Parliament (MP) Kimani Ichung’wah and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki jointly endorsed the idea of having Kiambu County stand apart from the larger Mt Kenya region.
Ichung’wah argued that Kiambu has long been grouped under Mt Kenya for political and cultural convenience despite being distinct in its identity.
