Kiambu County Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wa has downplayed a visit by a section of Kiambu County grassroots leaders to State House.

Thang’wa, who took to his X handle on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, laughed off President William Ruto’s latest attempt to make forays in the Mt Kenya region, saying the move carried little significance.

A small fraction of Kiambu

The Senator argued that the meeting represented a very tiny portion of Kiambu’s population, insisting that the majority of residents were unmoved.

“Today, 4,800 people from Kiambu trooped to State House. 400 from each of the 12 Kiambu Constituencies. Out of a population of 2.4 million, that’s 0.002%. The other 2,395,200 didn’t bother,” Thang’wa said.

According to him, the figures showed that Kiambu residents were no longer enthusiastic about stage-managed gatherings and had shifted their loyalty elsewhere.

He described the State House reception as “a hotel,” where gatherings had become routine but lacked meaningful impact on local people’s daily struggles.

Call for genuine engagement

Thang’wa went further to argue that leaders who hide behind organised delegations rather than directly engaging citizens in their villages and towns have lost touch with reality.

He urged those in power to abandon public-relations stunts and instead embrace genuine dialogue with communities.

“The truth is, most of those who attended are already marching under the Wantam banner. Statehouse is now a Hotel! Anyone who hides behind staged gatherings instead of meeting people in their localities has lost it and is in denial,” he added.

His remarks come just days after increasing reports of tension within the Mt Kenya political scene, with some leaders expressing discomfort over how President Ruto is handling the region’s political dynamics.

Thang’wa’s position highlights the deepening rift between a section of Mt Kenya leaders allied to Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens’ Party (DCP) and those supporting Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

With the 2027 elections drawing closer, the battle for Mt Kenya’s 7 million votes is already becoming a hot contest.

Political analysts say Thang’wa’s blunt dismissal of the Kiambu State House visit reflects growing scepticism in the region, where residents feel disconnected from government promises despite repeated political engagements in Nairobi.
