Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has said that ODM Party will back President William Ruto’s 2027 reelection.

In a press briefing on Friday, October 17, 2025, in Siaya County, Wandayi also said that he will lobby for the party’s National Executive Council to elect Senator Oburu Odinga as the late Raila Odinga’s replacement.

“We don’t want to be part of the initiatives that aimed at the ODM party that has been intact for more than 20 years and for the bonds that hold the party members to be strengthened, Dr Oburu fits the bill,” Wandayi stated.

“ODM, which is the party that I belong to, has made a very wise decision to appoint Oburu as acting party leader. In fact, I will be proposing as a live member of ODM that the ODM convenes a national Delegates Convention soon after Baba’s send off, to actually confirm dr Oburu’s appointment and elect him formally as the ODM party leader.”

The CS endorsed him for the post, saying he has the wealth of experience, necessary skills, and the composure to steer this party to the next level while working closely with our partners in the broad-based government, who are UDA-led by President Ruto.

“We want to remove any doubts whatsoever from anybody’s mind, this region will remain intact within ODM and will get leadership and direction from our party leaders, Dr Oburu,” he said.

Sticking with Ruto

At the same time, Wandayi brushed off the claims that ODM will field a candidate to run for the country’s top seat in the 2027 contest.

“As ODM party, Baba has left us in the hands of President William Ruto. That’s where we shall stay till the end and can dare say without any fear of the contravention that we are going to walk step by step with President Ruto to the end,” Wandayi said.

“We shall stick with him in 2027 and beyond because, as a Community, we are safe in his hands.”

Wandayi said he has trust and confidence in Oburu if he sits at the party steering wheel, and the ODM party will never go wrong.
