Turkana: 4 gunmen killed as others escape death by a whisker after shoot out with police

Four gunmen were killed on Monday, August 1, 2022, after a clash with the police in Lokwar village, Turkana County.

The four were part of the gunmen who attacked and killed seven people during a killing spree where 100 houses were burnt on Sunday, July 31, 2022.

At the time of their arrest, the four engaged police in a shootout after they were intercepted while attempting to escape using their motorcycles.

During the confrontation, four gunmen were fatally injured as they escaped from the officers. The officers, however, escaped unhurt.

The other motorcycle carrying two armed passengers diverted to a nearby thicket. Police recovered an AK-47 rifle loaded with seven rounds of ammunition and motorcycles.

“They made a recovery of an AK-47 rifle loaded with seven rounds of 7.6239 mm. The motorcycle was also recovered. All armed, the other motorcycle with two pillion passengers escaped to the nearby thicket. Recovery of an AK-47 rifle with bolt number 03687 loaded with seven rounds of 7.6239 mm was also recovered, and a motorcycle Reg. No. KMEN 596A, make Honda red was also recovered,” the police said in a statement.

Police moved the four bodies to Lowdar Referral Hospital mortuary, awaiting identification and autopsy.

The incident comes exactly a week after two senior officers were injured in Lokichar after armed men robbing passengers along the Lokichar-Kalemngorok road opened fire at them.

The route is notorious for attacks with the gunmen using motorcycles to escape after attacking residents, most coming from the neighbouring West Pokot County.

The National Police Service has been looking for criminals who have constantly been killing innocent people.
