Body odour is something many people experience, especially during hot weather, physical activity, or stressful days. While sweating is a natural process that helps cool the body, the unpleasant smell that sometimes comes from the armpits can affect confidence and comfort.

According to health experts, sweat itself does not usually have a strong smell. The odour develops when bacteria on the skin break down sweat, particularly in areas such as the armpits where sweat glands are more active.

Keep your armpits clean

Good hygiene remains one of the most effective ways to prevent bad odour. Washing the armpits daily with soap and clean water helps remove sweat, bacteria and dead skin cells that contribute to unpleasant smells.

The World Health Organization noted that personal hygiene plays an important role in preventing infections and maintaining overall health. Drying the armpits properly after bathing is equally important because bacteria thrive in moist environments.

People who sweat heavily may benefit from showering after exercise or any activity that causes excessive sweating. Keeping the skin clean reduces the chances of odour developing throughout the day.

Choose the right clothes

What you wear can also influence body odour. Tight clothing can trap sweat and make it easier for bacteria to grow. Breathable fabrics, such as cotton, allow air to circulate and help the skin stay dry.

Changing clothes regularly, especially after sweating, can make a significant difference. Wearing clean shirts each day helps prevent the build-up of sweat and bacteria on fabric.

The National Health Service (NHS) advised people who struggle with excessive sweating to wear loose-fitting clothing and avoid materials that do not allow the skin to breathe properly.

Watch your diet and use antiperspirants

Some foods may contribute to stronger body odour. Garlic, onions, spicy foods and excessive caffeine can affect the way sweat smells in some individuals. Drinking enough water, on the other hand, helps the body regulate temperature and supports overall wellbeing.

Using an antiperspirant or deodorant can also help. Antiperspirants work by reducing the amount of sweat produced, while deodorants help control odour-causing bacteria and provide a fresh scent.

While occasional body odour is normal, persistent or unusually strong odour may sometimes signal an underlying medical condition. If regular hygiene practices and deodorants do not help, seeking advice from a healthcare professional may be necessary.

Preventing armpit odour does not require expensive products or complicated routines. Simple habits such as washing regularly, wearing clean clothes, staying hydrated and choosing suitable deodorants can help keep unpleasant smells away and boost confidence throughout the day.
