Former Football star and MP aspirant McDonald Mariga is nursing injuries after he was attacked while campaigning in Kibera on Monday, May 30, 2022.

Mariga was attacked by unknown goons while campaigning in the constituency which is perceived to be Raila Odinga’s stronghold.

Mariga Hospitalised

In a viral video, Mariga, who sought treatment at a city hospital, was injured on the right hand which was wrapped with a bandage.

Addressing his supporters after receiving treatment, Mariga accused opponents in the Azimio la Umoja coalition of plotting the attack against him.

“I want to condemn this dirty politics of hiring goons to attack us. We want clean politics where everyone is allowed to sell their manifesto in peace. They have really hurt me; they broke my hand but it won’t be the end. We will still campaign,” Mariga said.

While calling for the arrest of the perpetrators, the politician urged his supporters to remain calm during the electioneering period.

“I do not want to see people lose lives because of the campaign. Let’s maintain peace,” he added.

Confirming the incident Kilimani OCPD Andrew Mbogo said investigations into the incident are ongoing.

To avert such incidents in the future, the police boss asked the aspirant to engage his office for security arrangements prior to the campaigns.

“We have launched investigations to know to get the people who were involved in causing the chaos. We also advised him to be notifying as of his events so that security can be offered to him Let not people be used during this campaign period because politics will always come and go,” Mbogo stated.

The former Harambee Stars ace is eying the seat currently occupied by Imran Okoth on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party ticket.

Kibra By-election

He unsuccessfully contested for the seat in November 2019 following the death of Imran’s brother Ken Okoth.
