Octopizzo: Don’t let Ebola debate overshadow Kenya’s real struggles
Kenyan rapper Octopizzo has urged Kenyans to remain focused on long-standing national challenges, warning that the country risks getting distracted by the ongoing Ebola controversy involving a US-linked quarantine facility at Laikipia Air Base.
In a statement shared via his X account on Friday, June 5, 2026, the artist said national attention has shifted sharply to the Ebola debate, leaving critical issues such as the rising cost of fuel, unemployment, missing children, public accountability and the Finance Bill 2026 with far less scrutiny.

“The conversation around Ebola has quickly dominated public attention, pushing critical national issues to the background. Questions about the rising cost of fuel, missing children, public accountability, economic hardship, and the implications of the Finance Bill are receiving far less scrutiny than they deserve,” Octopizzo stated.
He argued that Kenya has developed a pattern of shifting attention from one crisis to another, leaving structural problems unresolved, while public debate moves on to the next trending issue.
“As a country, we must be careful not to allow every new crisis or headline to distract us from long-standing challenges that directly affect the lives of ordinary citizens. Whether it is a health scare, a major sporting event, or another trending national debate, the result is often the same: public attention shifts while unresolved issues remain unaddressed,” he said.
Octopizzo also highlighted the struggles facing ordinary Kenyans, particularly in low-income communities, where the cost of living, unemployment and limited opportunities continue to weigh heavily on households. He said such challenges require sustained national focus rather than temporary attention driven by breaking news cycles.
“For communities like Kibra and many others across Kenya, the cost of these distractions is significant. Families continue to struggle with the rising cost of living, young people face unemployment and limited opportunities, and vulnerable groups are left waiting for meaningful interventions,” he said.
He further called for a more informed and consistent citizen engagement in governance issues, stressing that accountability should not fade once public attention shifts elsewhere.
“Transformative leadership requires focus, accountability, and an informed citizenry. We must resist the cycle of distraction and remain committed to asking difficult questions, demanding transparency, and advocating for policies that improve the lives of all Kenyans not just for a news cycle, but for generations to come,” Octopizzo stated.
His remarks come as Kenya remains gripped by heated debate over the Ebola quarantine arrangement at Laikipia Air Base, where American citizens exposed to the virus are being held under a US-supported medical isolation programme.
The facility has sparked widespread public concern, with sections of the public and leaders questioning the transparency, safety implications and terms of the agreement between Kenya and the United States. The controversy has triggered legal action, protests and intense online debate, with critics demanding full disclosure of the arrangements and assurances on public health safeguards.
While the government has defended the initiative as part of international health cooperation, the issue continues to dominate national conversation, further fuelling Octopizzo’s warning that Kenya must avoid losing sight of other pressing socio-economic challenges amid the ongoing controversy.
