FKF Super Cup preview: Gor Mahia aim for Tusker scalp in league’s curtain-raiser

Gor Mahia and Tusker FC will renew their rivalry on Sunday, August 23, 2026 when they meet in the 2026/27 FKF Super Cup at Nyayo National Stadium.
The match, scheduled to kick off at 3:00 pm, will pit the reigning Football Kenya Federation Premier League champions against the FKF Cup holders in the traditional opening fixture of the new domestic season.
The encounter brings together two of Kenya’s most decorated clubs and adds another chapter to their long-running rivalry in the Super Cup.

Gor Mahia have dominated the competition since its current format was introduced in 2009, winning the trophy seven times. Tusker have also enjoyed considerable success, lifting the title on three occasions.
The two sides have met five times in the Super Cup, with their previous meetings producing plenty of drama. Gor Mahia recorded their only outright victory over Tusker in the competition in 2017, while the other four matches were settled through penalty shootouts.
Tusker prevailed from the spot in 2012, 2014 and 2021, while Gor Mahia claimed a penalty-shootout victory in 2013.
That record makes Sunday’s contest an intriguing one, with both teams having plenty of history to draw upon as they compete for the first piece of domestic silverware of the campaign.
For Gor Mahia, victory would provide an ideal start to their attempt to retain the league title while also adding another trophy to their collection.
Ahead of the clash, Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor described their opponents as a side that has consistently given them problems, stressing that his team must be at their best.
“They are a team that has given us problems. In our first match, we won, but the game did not go as we intended, and we struggled against them. We then lost to them in the second leg,” Akonnor said.

The Super Cup also gives both clubs an important competitive workout ahead of their continental campaigns, which are expected to begin in September. The fixture therefore offers an opportunity for the coaches to assess their squads and sharpen their teams before the demands of the new season intensify.
With the first domestic trophy of 2026/27 on the line, all eyes will be on Nyayo Stadium as two of Kenya’s biggest clubs battle for early-season honours.
The two sides are set to represent the country in the 2026/27 CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup respectively.
