A suspected drug dealer has been detained for an additional three days to allow the police to conclude their investigation.

Senior Resident Magistrate Rita Orora decided in a Mombasa court following a miscellaneous application by the Anti-Narcotics Unit.

According to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the suspect identified as Salim Mwinyi was apprehended over the weekend in the Magogoni area within the Kisauni sub-county of Mombasa County.

“A Mombasa court has granted police three days to conclude investigating a suspected drug dealer arrested with assorted drugs worth millions over the weekend. Senior Resident Magistrate Hon. Rita Orora allowed miscellaneous applications by the Anti-Narcotics Unit requesting more days to complete investigating Salim Kilanga Mwinyi,” ODPP stated.

“The detective indicated that undertaking investigations relating to offences under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act No. 4 of 2022 would expand the investigations into the violation of other laws against Mwinyi and his associates.”

During the operation, officers from the Anti-Narcotics Unit discovered three white clear polythene papers containing brown substances suspected to be narcotic drugs.

In addition to the drugs, law enforcement officers also seized a significant amount of cash totalling Ksh1.7 million in Kenyan currency (equivalent to $16,910) and USD 3,610.

The ODPP revealed that the investigation into Mwinyi extends beyond violations of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act No. 4 of 2022, potentially involving other laws.

The matter is scheduled to be mentioned again on April 18, 2024.

“Hon. Orora heard that the Anti-Narcotics Unit officers recovered three white clear polythene papers with brown substances suspected to be narcotic drugs during the operation in the Magogoni area within the Kisauni sub-county in Mombasa County. Police also recovered cash amounting to Sh1.7 million in Kenyan denomination (Sh1,327,300) and USD 3,610 during the arrest,” ODPP added.

“The investigator further submitted that the weighing, sampling and analysis of recovered suspected drugs require time due to the complexities involved. The matter will be mentioned on 18 April 2024 for further direction.”
