Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has taken former boxing champion Conjestina Achieng’ to rehabilitation, for a third time.

In a statement after Achieng was admitted to the Mombasa Women’s Rehabilitation Centre, Sonko lamented that his previous attempts to help the boxer had been watered down.

“Even though our chances in Conjestina’s healing journey were watered down, I’m a person who doesn’t give up in life. It is for this reason that we have given Conjestina the third and last chance again on her case. I just want to let the public know that she was readmitted at the Mombasa Women Rehabilitation Centre where she will start her treatment afresh under the care of a group of specialists, including councillors, consultants and physiatrists,” Sonko stated.

This comes days after media personality Carol Radull shared photos of Achieng having gone back to drugs, in a sorry state of affairs.

“On 2nd Jan I visited my friend Congestina Achieng in her shags in Yala. She’s been there about 2 months and is back to her same lifestyle. She has good days and bad days. When I arrived she was having a bad day but her face lit up when she saw me and we chatted for a long time as best we could. I tried with my layman’s ability to gently encourage her to “clean up her act”. Many have tried to help her but none of us have succeeded in a long-term solution to her predicament,” Radull stated.

Consequently, Sonko was accused of having abandoned the former champion after allegedly using her for clout chasing.

Sonko however denied the claims, saying he had tried his best to help her by offering her a chance to be part of his security detail.

Sonko blames Achieng’s family

According to phone conversations shared by Sonko, Achieng left his security team after a misunderstanding with colleagues.

Sonko also blamed her family for allowing her to relapse into her old lifestyle, watering down all the efforts made to rehabilitate the star.

“Mnajua nyinyi kama family mnaniangusha, siezi kua nafanya kazi ya Conjestina kilaa saa, na wakenya nasaidia ni wengi, you should also play your part. Akikuja nyumbani munamwacha avute bangi. It is expensive. This process is very expensive,” Sonko is heard saying in the phone calls.

“It is wasting my money and time, and it is not right. I did my best. The treatment is expensive, and paying doctors is also equally very expensive. This is embarrassing, and it looks like PR that I keep doing and abandoning,” he added.

Achieng left rehab in June 2023 and immediately joined Sonko’s security detail in the coastal region, where he was the head of security at the Salama Bling Beach resort in Kanamai.

She however left the role later, without much details being shared to the public.
