Sonko presents WhatsApp call recording as evidence in court
Former Nairobi County Governor Micheal Mbuvi Sonko has tabled a WhatsApp audio call recording to court as part of evidence in his ongoing graft case.
The court heard that the audio clip was recorded by Sonko after Jambo Pay director Danson Muchemi reached out to him through a lady called Agnes.
According to the audio played in court, a Jambo Pay director was heard telling Sonko that he can help him in his case.
He also said that the audio evidence that Sonko had tabled in court of their conversation had affected his brand negatively.
“One day when I was in Samburu, I received breaking news: my brother here has gone to court, and even his recordings were played in court and were all over the media and bloggers,” Muchemi said in the call.
“Lakini umwambie amenikosea; nataka arudi a correct hii maneno,” Muchemi continued.
However, Sonko interjected and told him, “Na nitaendelea kukukosea, na nitaendelea.”
Agitated with the remarks, Sonko told Muchemi that he does not need any help from him and he should keep off from his cases, adding that he will handle them as he has been doing on his own.
He also told the Jambo Pay boss that he should never call or look for him.
“Ulifanya case yako ukasema mimi ni corrupt. Whatever we were doing was legit, so you think your brand is special. Is your brand more important than mine? So, you want us to go to jail without defending ourselves because of your brand? We also have those brands, my friend,” Sonko is heard saying in the phone conversation.
“And you are not a good friend, and don’t look for me again. Do not call me again, please. I beg you, do not ever look for me. Leave me alone; let me handle my cases alone. I don’t need help,” Sonko added.
Appearing before Milimani Anti-Corruption Principal Magistrate Charles Ondieki on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, Police Constable Halili Waweru Mswadiki, attached to Capitol Hill Police, confirmed the contents of the clip.
Officer Mswadiki told the court that on July 26, 2025, Sonko made a report regarding a conference WhatsApp phone call that he had received at 1335 hours.
The report states that he had received a call via WhatsApp from one lady called Agnes regarding an ongoing court case, and in the call Muchemi, who was his co-accused, was included.
According to Officer Mswadiki, in his statement, Sonko stated that Muchemi started provoking him, leading to some exchange of words between them, and he decided to report him to get police assistance.
“I listened to the recording after Sonko insisted I listen to it, and I confirm it is the same recording that has been played in court today,” Officer Mswadiki told the court.

The court heard that after Sonko left, the officer went to the station’s OCS office and reported what had happened, who then said that the matter would be forwarded to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kilimani for investigations.
