Gor Mahia’s Kibwage upbeat ahead of Kakamega Homeboyz test

Gor Mahia’s centre back Mike Kibwage is upbeat as the record champions return to Football Kenya Federation Premier League action this Sunday, May 3, 2026, with a demanding away fixture against Kakamega Homeboyz at Mumias Sports Complex starting at 3:00 pm local time.
Speaking fresh from a morale-boosting victory over arch-rivals AFC Leopards in the Mashemeji Derby, Kibwage has revealed that K’Ogalo will be aiming to maintain momentum and tighten their grip at the top of the table. A win in Mumias would see Gor Mahia extend their lead to nine points, a significant step in the push to reclaim the league title.
Ready for Homeboyz
”The boys are ready and up to the task because it is a big motivation to win the Derby, and we believe the game against Homeboyz is not easy. We are ready for the game because it will be very crucial for us to be able to get the three points to open the gap. After all, our challengers are not playing,” Kibwage said.

The Harambee Stars defender added that the Mashemeji Derby triumph and the FKF Cup break will be a motivation for the team in Mumias, as Gor Mahia aim to complete a double against Homeboyz this season.
”Of course, even without any motivation in terms of money or anything else, the fixture itself is a motivation for us, because you know this week we have like three games, including the FKF Cup, so we are going to use this chance to win our match and get a good rest heading back home,” he added.
On the other side, club assistant coach Bismark Kobi-Mensah has cautioned that it will not be so easy for Gor Mahia to pin Homeboyz down after encountering the side’s threat in the reverse fixture.
Homeboyz threat
”The jubilation and the celebration in a win against Leopards is over. I see Kakamega Homeboyz as one of the good teams in the league because they are in a better position. We played them in the first leg, and I can tell you they were a better team in the second half. They are a good side, but it is not a game that is above us. I think we are also in a good standing to meet them, the three points are important, and we want to win the league as well,” he said.

The first leg meeting between the two sides was a tightly contested affair, with Gor Mahia edging it 1-0 courtesy of a decisive strike from Alpha Onyango, who once again proved his importance by scoring the winner in the derby last weekend.
Historically, Gor Mahia have enjoyed the upper hand in this fixture. In 23 league meetings, they have registered 13 wins, alongside seven draws and just three losses. The record is further underlined by 32 goals scored, only 15 conceded, and an impressive 12 clean sheets, numbers the team will look to leverage as they chase maximum points on the road.
