Gor Mahia coach explains Ebenezer Assifuah’s benching despite impressive form

Gor Mahia assistant trainer Kobi Bismarck has explained the continued benching of in-form striker Ebenezer Assifuah, who once again stepped from the substitute bench to inspire K’Ogalo to victory on Saturday, February 28, 2026, in a win over Mathare United.

Speaking on Sunday, March 1, 2026, the Ghanaian stated that the benching of the striker is a cautionary measure, as the player is far from being fully fit since joining as a January signing.

“He is a talented player. If you know his background in professional football from France and other countries, you will understand why. It was not a gamble that we were leaving him on the bench,” he said.

On Assifuah

“What we expect from him. People are talking about his involvement: He is the main striker we have now, and we are managing his time because he is not fully fit yet,” he stated.

Bismarck also spoke highly of the quality of talent within Gor’s ranks.

He specifically addresses the performance of Lewis Bandi and Levin Odhiambo, who only lasted in the first half before being hauled off as Gor searched for an opener against the Slum Boys.

Rotations

According to the assistant coach, whereas the rotation proved crucial in turning the game around, the first-half substitutes did their part in helping the team’s cause.

“When the substitutes came in, you saw the difference: they raised the levels and changed the game. It is normal, as Ochuoga and Onyona have played a lot of matches, unlike the likes of Bandi and Levin. I also don’t think that they played badly; the most important thing is we won,” he stated.

On the display against Mathare, Bismarch reserved credit for their improved performance, backing John Kamau’s team to get better with time.

“We have to give the opponent his flowers. I greeted the coach. I watched them against Shabana, and it was a different team we faced today. They were tactically strong, and I believe if they can play like this every weekend, they will win many games,” he added.

Gor Mahia have since moved nine points in the lead, with their closest challengers, AFC Leopards, set to entertain Shabana in a massive encounter at Nyayo this Sunday.
