Mathare coach reveals cheap mistakes that gifted Gor Mahia easy win

Mathare United head coach John Kamau has once again decried late lapses from his team after their defeat to Gor Mahia at Nyayo National Stadium.

Speaking after the match on Saturday, February 28, 2026, Kamau attributed the script of his team conceding late in games, as it happened in their previous tie against Shabana, to inexperience from his budding charges.

Team lapses

“We are conceding goals from individual mistakes. I do not think they are situations a coach can coach. It’s upon the player to be responsible. I believe with more experience it can be solved, and it’s what the team has to focus on doing.”

Kamau was, however, praiseworthy of the work ethic of his boys in the entire game, stating that they demonstrated good fighting spirit for the entire ninety minutes, bar the late lapses.

The coach also reserved praises for his striker Dennis Okoth, who once again stepped up with a goal in what promises to be the revelation of a new goal poacher. Okoth’s goal against Gor came after he also notched a brace in the team’s previous comeback win over Tusker FC in a past league encounter.

Kamau has, however, defended the decision to leave him on the bench, despite his good goal-scoring run.

“The script of the game is just as it happened. About Okoth, he is a talented player, but he has a lot to achieve in terms of his work ethic. That’s why we started with Amalemba, but I am happy for him, and he has shown tremendous improvement. We hope he can continue and start to begin games from the start,” he added.

Despite pulling level from the striker’s 83rd-minute equalizer, Mathare were ultimately forced to contend with a bitter end to the clash after Gor regained their lead on the spot five minutes later courtesy of Enoch Morisson’s late penalty kick.

The defeat inflicted back-to-back losses on Slum Boys as Gor created a nine-point gap at the helm of the standings.
