Gor Mahia overcome Mathare’s scare to extend league lead
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League leaders Gor Mahia have moved nine points clear in the league standings after a battling 2-1 victory over Mathare United this Saturday, February 28, 2026, at the Nyayo National Stadium.
Goals from either half from Ebenezer Assifuah and Enoch Morisson saw Gor claim their seventh consecutive league win to move nine points clear on the log.
Tense finale
The clash saw K’Ogalo‘s resilience put to the test after Dennis Okoth’s equaliser with ten minutes to play put Gor on course to contend with dropped points for the first time in seven games.
The log leaders proved equal to the task, applying pressure that earned them a spot kick for the eventual match winner.
The clash saw John Kamau’s team return to the venue hoping for better tidings after their late implosion against Shabana FC on Wednesday, February 26, 2026.
Kamau made a small tweak to his team, with skipper Ellie Asieche among those back for first-team duties.
The slum dwellers looked capable of the task of the day’s sole task of keeping at bay the in-form league leaders.
Gor, however, proved the dominant force with plenty of open-cut chances at goal in the half.
Cagey half
Shariff Musa had a shot stopped by Mathare’s custodian after breaking free from a shackle of bodies in the 11th minute.

Ebenezer Adukwaw also saw his drilled effort at goal stopped by the alert Kevin Ouru at the goal with minutes to halftime.
Gor’s best chance of the half fell to the Ghanaian again, who just could not connect to the intended target from Sylvester Owino’s flick at the front post.
Charles Akonnor rang changes at the start of the second half, bringing on the fresh legs of Ebenezer Assifuah, Paul Ochuoga, and Byrson Onyona.
Master stroke
The changes proved a masterstroke minutes later as Assfiuah’s ferocious strike beat Ouru to snap the reigning deadlock.
Substitute Okoth also rose from the bench to send Mathare back on level terms.
The dreadlocked attacker bundled home from fellow fresh entrant Kiprotich to level the clash seven minutes after his introduction.
With the clash delicately poised for a share of spoils, Gor’s continued probe was ultimately rewarded from a penalty spot after a goalkeeping foul on Assifuah.
Mathare’s collapse
Morisson stepped up to seal a successive bitter ending for John Kamau’s team, who collapsed late again at the same venue after battling to come back to the clash.
The win now puts Gor on a nine-point advantage at the summit of the pile, with their close challengers AFC Leopards and Shabana set to face off in a highly anticipated challengers clash at the same venue.
