FKF Premier League 2026/27 season: Opening fixtures for Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards

The 2026/27 Football Kenya Federation Premier League campaign will get underway on Saturday, August 29 to Sunday, August 30, 2026, with all 18 clubs scheduled to be in action during the opening weekend.
Defending champions Gor Mahia will launch their quest for another league title at home against Murang’a Seal, while 1998 winners AFC Leopards will also begin their campaign on home soil against Bandari, as the club continues with key reinforcements.
The opening round will also feature Nairobi United against KCB, while Ulinzi Stars will welcome FKF Cup champions Tusker at the Lang’ata Sports Complex.
Newly promoted sides have been handed demanding assignments as they make their first appearances in the top flight. 3K FC will entertain Mara Sugar, while Mombasa United will face Kakamega Homeboyz and Migori Youth will take on Kenya Police.
Gor Mahia face tough early schedule

After their encounter with Murang’a Seal, the reigning champions are scheduled to meet APS Bomet, Bandari, Kakamega Homeboyz, KCB and Nairobi United.
The sequence could prove difficult for coach Charles Akonnor’s side, particularly because they struggled to collect maximum points against several of those opponents during the previous campaign.
Gor Mahia will therefore need to make a strong start if they are to maintain their grip on the FKF Premier League title.
Leopards begin with Bandari
AFC Leopards, who ended last season as runners-up, will also have a demanding run of fixtures after their opening clash with Bandari.
The Leopards are scheduled to visit Kenya Police in the second round before returning home to play Shabana in Matchweek Three.
They will then travel to face Mara Sugar before meeting Kakamega Homeboyz in the “Ingo Derby” in Nairobi.
The encounter with Kenya Police could attract particular attention, given that Police produced a commanding 4-0 victory over Ingwe the last time the two teams met.
Mashemeji Derby set for November
Football fans will have to wait until November for the first Mashemeji Derby of the new season.
AFC Leopards are expected to host Gor Mahia in the first meeting between the two giants during the weekend of November 19-22, 2026.
The return fixture is provisionally scheduled for April 2-4, 2027, with Gor Mahia set to host the second leg.
Legal dispute
The confirmation of the new campaign’s opening date comes after uncertainty surrounding the league’s promotion and relegation framework.
The controversy centred on regulations introduced by FKF in September 2026, which provided for three teams at the bottom of the Premier League standings to drop into the NSL, while the top three NSL teams would move up to the top division.
Kariobangi Sharks, who finished 16th last season and were consequently relegated under the new system, challenged the decision before the Sports Disputes Tribunal.
The club maintained that the regulations had not been properly approved by the FKF National Executive Committee and also questioned whether sufficient public participation had taken place.
However, the SDT dismissed the challenge on Monday, August 10, 2026, ruling that Kariobangi Sharks had not first exhausted the federation’s internal dispute-resolution procedures.
With the legal challenge now settled at that stage, attention turns to the pitch as the 2026/27 FKF Premier League season prepares to begin.
