PSG vs Slovan Bratislava: Champions League preview and team news

Paris Saint-Germain begin the defence of their Champions League crown on Wednesday night, September 9, 2026, when they host Slovan Bratislava at the Parc des Princes.
The French champions are chasing an extraordinary third consecutive European title, while Slovan are returning to the competition after qualifying through a demanding route. The Slovakian side endured a difficult debut in the competition two seasons ago, losing every one of their eight league-phase matches.
PSG aiming to start title defence strongly
PSG’s path to retaining the Champions League trophy last season was far from straightforward. Luis Enrique’s team struggled during the league phase and eventually finished 11th, but their performances improved considerably once the knockout stage began.
They overcame Monaco before producing impressive victories over Chelsea and Liverpool. Bayern Munich were then defeated in a dramatic semi-final, setting up another Champions League final against Arsenal.
The final in Budapest ended 1-1 after normal time, with PSG eventually prevailing on penalties to lift the trophy for the second successive year.
That achievement placed PSG alongside Real Madrid as the only clubs to successfully defend the Champions League title in the modern era. Real Madrid had previously accomplished the feat between 2016 and 2018.
Enrique has since committed his future to the club, strengthening the belief that PSG are attempting to establish themselves as Europe’s dominant force.
Their opening weeks of the new campaign, however, have been less convincing.
After defeating Aston Villa to win the UEFA Super Cup, PSG suffered defeat against Lens in the Trophee des Champions and have subsequently failed to win any of their first four domestic matches. That poor sequence has left them down in 13th position in Ligue 1.
Their latest setback came at home to Monaco, who recovered from conceding first to secure a 2-1 victory on Friday.
A Champions League fixture against Slovan therefore gives Enrique’s players an opportunity to rediscover their rhythm on the biggest European stage.
Slovan return after difficult Champions League debut
Slovan Bratislava enter the tournament with considerably less European pedigree than their hosts but will be delighted simply to have secured another place in the league phase.
Their first Champions League campaign in 2024-25 ended painfully. They finished 35th in the 36-team standings after suffering defeat in all eight matches.
The club are now being coached by Yaya Toure, the former Barcelona and Manchester City midfielder who won the Champions League during his playing career. If he takes charge of Slovan in the competition, he is set to become the first African manager to lead a team in the Champions League.
Slovan’s latest qualification campaign required them to negotiate several rounds. They defeated Iberia Tbilisi before producing a surprise victory over Swedish champions Mjallby.
Their playoff tie against Celje proved considerably more difficult. After a 1-1 draw in the first meeting, Slovan needed extra time in the return fixture before Cristian Martinez scored the decisive goal and eliminated the possibility of a penalty shootout.
Domestically, though, Slovan have experienced a worrying dip. The reigning Slovak champions currently occupy fourth place in the Super Liga after suffering consecutive league defeats.
Their previous visit to the Parc des Princes came during the 2011-12 Europa League campaign, when PSG recorded a narrow 1-0 victory.
They will face a substantially stronger PSG side this time around.
Team news
PSG have reshaped their attacking options during the summer, with several departures making room for new arrivals including Mika Godts, Maghnes Akliouche and Spain international Ferran Torres.
The attacking competition is fierce, with Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia all pushing for starting positions.
Kvaratskhelia was particularly influential in Europe’s premier competition last season, recording 16 goal contributions across 16 Champions League appearances, a new club record for a single campaign.
At the back, Warren Zaire-Emery was deployed at left-back against Monaco as Lucas Digne continues to struggle to establish himself following his return to Paris.
Nuno Mendes is now available again after completing his suspension and could return to the starting XI.
For Slovan, Tigran Barseghyan will be one of the principal attacking threats. The Armenian winger led the club for goals created, assists and chances produced during their previous Champions League league-phase campaign.
He is expected to provide service for experienced forward Andraz Sporar, while summer arrival Roman Cerepkai offers another option in attack, although he is likely to begin among the substitutes.
