Confident Akonnor: Gor Mahia are getting better and better

Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor heaped praise on his players as they solidified their quest to reclaim the league title with a statement 2-1 win over third-placed Shabana on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at the Nyayo National Stadium.
Speaking after the victory, which moved K’Ogalo ten points clear at the summit of the FKF Premier League, Akonnor attributed the result to tactical growth.
Getting better
“I think our boys are processing things well. We are content with how they are playing tactically. We are getting better and better, showing the ability to deal with whatever an opponent throws at us and the different styles of play they adopt,” he noted.
The Ghanaian tactician downplayed moments where his team appeared to struggle, stating it was unrealistic to expect opponents to simply roll out the red carpet for the league leaders.
“I don’t expect opponents to come easy at us. They had moments where they took the game to us, but we are happy with how we managed the match and picked up the points,” he added.
The win saw Gor extend its lead at the top to ten points, adding to their realistic chance of clinching the honours that eluded them last season.
Gor Mahia closing in on the title
With less than ten games to play, K’Ogalo are now favourites for the title, having mustered a run of form of 15 games without a defeat.
Against Shabana, Jackson Dwang delivered a man-of-the-match performance, scoring a sublime strike and assisting a second one to midfield counterpart Alpha Onyango for the crucial win.

Meanwhile, a tight competition for slots is ongoing just below the Premier League title-chasing pack after FKF Premier League sides Bandari FC and Murang’a Seal both surrendered crucial leads to drop points in Week 25 action this Sunday, March 22, 2026.
The mid-table teams were held to 1-1 draws by Mathare United and Kakamega Homeboyz, respectively.
Midtable teams chase
At the San Sebastian arena in Muranga’, Michael Macharia fired Murang’a Seal into a second-half lead after being set up by Lucas Maina in the 57th minute.
However, the advantage proved short-lived as John Kamau’s Mathare United fought back.
At the Bukhungu Stadium, visiting Bandari failed to protect a lead earned through Geoffrey Ojunga. Oliver Majaka levelled the tie for Patrick Odhiambo’s Homeboyz to ensure the points were shared.
Homeboyz are now placed fifth with 39 points, sitting just one point above Murang’a Seal. Bernard Mwalala’s Bandari occupy eighth on the log, while Mathare United sit in 13th.
